Link: QB Jake Fromm Declares For The Draft

He was committed to Bama for a while, and he probably would have flipped to Georgia anyway..but I always thought it was interesting that he went to Georgia, and we got Tua. Jake and Tua were once roommates at one of those 'Elite' camps
Carson Beck was committed to Bama at one time, and We got Bryce. dont know about elite camp. But I think we got the better of that as well.

Well...U bet we did...but I wondered if Tua may have talked about Bama during that stay. Fromm really wanted to go to Georgia I know...and why would he not have wanted to go? His home state school.

Greg McElroy is really high on Newman. He has called some of his games. Supposedly, he is really accurate, but can also run. He is listed as 6’4”, 230
CKS knows he has to change his offense if he wants to remain competitive. Will see how this goes for him. If the transfer starts, they will see a couple of QB transfers ... if Beck starts, they will see the same but at least it will be a QB he recruited. If the transfer starts, they will need to win a NC for it all to be worth it.

I watched Newman play a few times this year, and I thought he was ok. He’s better than all their other options, but he definitely doesn’t scare me or anything.

I think catching Georgia early next year really plays to our advantage. Their defense will be elite, but they will have so much inexperience on offense. I will be disappointed if we lose that one given what both teams have coming back.

If we beat them early we will probably have to beat them late too!

I sure hope Bama wins vs UGA at home. Whichever team loses that game will have a tough season ahead, especially if it is us. We would have to win out and win the SEC championship just to make the playoffs. The team would have to be extra ready mentally and physically (basically injury free) all season.

Lose early and you have a chance, but Alabama is not going to lose that game.

Assuming Newman is their starter, Bama will be the best defense he has seen other than Clemson. Clemson beat them something like 52-6 last year. I am sure the kid will improve over the off season and have a decent defense to play against in practice though.

I think it will be Golding's (or whoever it ends up being) first big test of the season. USC will be tough, but not like Georgia will be. Glad it is a home game!

Curious. Why especially if it is us? Wouldn’t we both be in the same boat? One loss w/an SEC Championship game IF we get there? Etc...

My reasoning, just my opinion, is that Bama has a much tougher schedule in the West than UGA does in the East. So, based on the schedule, we have a tougher season with the teams we play. UGA will probably only need to worry about Florida. We/Bama will have to play at LSU, plusTexas AM, Auburn at home, and also deal with the unknowns of Lane Kiffin and Mike Leach (I still think we beat those 2 teams by double digits). The West is just more physical overall.

Saban will continue the ownership of his former coaches next fall.

UGA does not worry me in 2012 with all they've lost and who is coming back for Bama.

11-1 or 12-0 is the only thing I'd consider a successful regular season. The only acceptable loss would be to LSU.

Kiffin and Leach don't have the guys yet to run their offenses...... we have 1 or 2 years before they scare me.....

Hello everyone. Wake Forest grad here with some family ties to Alabama. Adding a few things on Newman.

He was very raw and lightly recruited coming out of high school. Big kid, big arm. Was banged up entering last season and started off as the backup but was forced into action late after Hartman broke his leg. Sort of burst onto the scene with a few big performances against mediocre teams. He really started to regress late this season once we hit the meat of our schedule and he lost RS soph Sage Surratt (our top player and AA level receiver with 1000 yards through 9 games). Put up some really poor performances against some crappy teams (Syracuse, Michigan State). At times he was just totally absent. Lots of debate over how much was his performance versus attrition at WR. You can pretty much throw out the Clemson game I think, our team just does not have the athleticism to hang with them in the trenches.

Regarding his transfer to UGA, I’m not nearly as high on him as some of the analysts. At his best he looked quite good but other times he missed tons of easy throws, didn’t have great pocket presence and was bailed out a bit by big physical WRs making contested catches downfield. He’s a legit dual threat yes but more of a power runner than some of the guys Alabama has struggled with in the past that are fast and elusive. Not sure his running will have the same effect against faster, stronger SEC defensive lines where it’s more difficult to break contain. Will be interesting to see how much the UGA offense is modified to fit his strengths. He wanted to play in a more pro style offense to audition for the NFL but a significant amount of his value comes from the running ability. Would expect to see him run quite a bit whether he wants to or not. Also will be interesting to see how comfortable he is in a new system with a new team around him in 8 months. Ultimately I don’t see him being a game changing addition for UGA though certainly more desirable than playing a complete unknown like they were facing after the Fromm departure.

Any questions just ask.

Thanks for the update...I lived in the Piedmont Triad for 15 years and rarely saw any WFU athletes who would start in the upper tier of the SEC...a few, but not many.

We’ve had some players here and there that could play about anywhere. Difference is the level of talent (and depth) across the board for top tier programs. Newman is certainly capable so I wouldn’t totally dismiss him based on where he started. I do think he will struggle with the transition and IMO it would have made more sense for him to stay with a system/team where he was very comfortable in a decidedly subpar conference. Clawson has had a solid stretch of seasons recently and is known for great talent evaluation on the recruiting scene but our ceiling as a program of course has its limits.
