QB Jameis Winston Updates

Winston said:
"The big thing up in Columbus was that I was from Alabama and had to go to either Alabama or Auburn." he said. "That was the popular question.

They all said 'Alabama or Auburn' like that was where I had to go. I was like, 'Why do I have to go to Alabama or Auburn to play ball?' when they said that."

The reply of "Because you're from there" didn't work for him. He said his decision has changed multiple times since the crush of offers last fall.

More reason to secure someone like Kiel. This was an informative read...

He does seem much more open to the idea of going the baseball route, and the quotes you use also indicate he doesn't feel he has to stay in-state. Of course, he might just be saying those to please some people.

If he was a high draft pick in MLB it would be hard to choose college football. If my son was drafted in baseball in the first 10 to 15 rounds I would tell him to play baseball. If baseball does not work out it is in most contracts that the team would pay for college.

I think he goes pro honestly. Even if he commits to us I wouldnt bank on him playing for us until the draft comes and goes and he doesnt sign...

Agreed. He says, baseball-wise, this is the most important summer of his life. That says a lot right there. He's looking to increase stock in baseball, not football, where his being phenomenal is an afterthought.

It will be interesting to see where Bama ranks when Winston announces his top favorites. I am not nearly as hopeful about Bama's chances after reading some of his recent interview comments. It appears that OU and Ohio State are seriously being considered along with LSU and Bama.

CS,

be careful here, you have some posters convinced that JW will be coming to the Capstone in the end. I have been reading the same articles you have and come to the conclusion that he will not be coming to Bama. I know its not a popular view on this board, but I wish I can be more optimistic. its either the MLB route or a college out of state. it seems that he wants to make it a point not to commit to an in-state school (Alabama). :conf3:

the good news here is that we have some very good QBs that are looking hard at Bama. I'm not sweating over Winston. good luck with his decision.

I would be happy with a trade with OU. They get Winston and we get Gunner. I really believe his draft stock is overrated. By overrated, I'm saying top 3 rounds of the draft. Anything after that wouldn't be surprising due to his potential. Plus the MLB is going towards a hard slotting draft system that will reduce the signing bonuses significantly.

If he solely focused on one sport he has the potential to be a superstar at either. I can't think of one QB that has spilt time and become something special. Kyle Parker and Russell Wilson are 2 recent examples and both were just decent QBs that never lead their teams to any real prominence.

One thing I've never understood, and I see it every year, is kids who "grew up" being a fan of "X" University, yet when that University comes calling, the kids continue to look around. It happens with every school in the country.

I've been a Bama fan since before I was born and I can promise you that if I was good enough to receive an offer from UA, I wouldn't have waited for the coach to leave my living room. Sign me up & tell me when I need to be there.

These kids now are playing the game. They keep looking around b/c when they visit other schools they are treated like Kings. I grew up a Bama fan and would have played for them if possible but if I were a top recruit then I would take my visits. I would take all 5 official visits to Hawaii. :)

Unfortunately for Bama, Winston grew up a fan of Oklahoma and they have offered. Right now it looks like Winston's top five favorites in no particular order are Bama, FSU, LSU, OU, and Ohio State. The real fear factor in the outcome of this equation is that he might sign with one of those schools but then later sign with MLB.

Jameis Winston: How Good Of A Baseball Prospect? - Tomahawk Nation
He is top 10 prospect for some based on potential and closer to 100 for others based on pro readiness. He has the potential to be a top draft pick but he is raw right now. Two sport stars are typically more raw than single sport stars, but the athleticism that he offers could allow him to vault up in the draft if someone sees him as a star, especially a team that could get him to commit solely to baseball. I don't have a set ranking for 2012 yet, but I would say he would be between 30th and 40th in the prep ranks for me.

He is playing well this season batting .475 with 4 HR's in 40 AB. He generates a lot of power at the plate with his long, lean frame. He projects as a potential 5 tool CF with time and polish. On the mound, he has a mid to upper 80's fastball and curveball that flashes signs of an above average pitch. He could be an interesting two-way player at FSU, but I think his future is in center field. Taking on playing QB, CF and pitching at FSU might be too much for one player but with his skills, I can't say that he couldn't do it.

I think we can cross Ohio State off his list. ;)

Why do you say that? :p

Report: NCAA launches separate probe of Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor - ESPN
The newspaper cited unnamed sources who said this is the most significant inquiry of Pryor. The NCAA and Ohio State are also probing more than 50 car purchases by Buckeyes players, their families and friends.

He and four other players have been suspended for the first five games this fall for accepting improper benefits from a local tattoo-shop owner. A sixth player, freshman linebacker Jordan Whiting, who received a discount on tattoos, must sit out the first game of the 2011 season. Tressel knew of those benefits and did not report it to Ohio State or NCAA officials.

Tressel resigned early Monday citing NCAA violations which he said had "been a distraction" for Ohio State.

The recent news makes me wonder what was so "cool" about Columbus and what his talk with Pryor involved.

I was thinking that exact same thing. Winston said it was because OSU/Tressel plays black QBs. I hope that is the case and it is not that he heard about some good deals on tattoos and pimped out rides the players get there. ;)

That was his reason for liking tOSU? Because the two in-state schools don't play black QBs at all...
