Question: How does Clemson do it?

Yes, Dabo was doing commercial real estate for a bit when he was out of coaching.

Now why would a promising young coach get out of the profession for just a couple of years, especially after serving on a staff that got hit hard by the NCAA? What motivation might he have?

Or better put - no one could give him a job for two years? No one?

apparently Clemson's top recruit for '21 has backed out on them.

The article said the kid wanted to have a chance to make more visits and that Dabo has a rule that committed players are not allowed to make visits to other schools.

and UNC is currently in the top 5 classes for "21...seriously?

what's up with that?

Both.

ETA: for clarification, it's primarily the hypocrisy. We can dive down that hole if you wish but i think it's pretty clear what I think of coach aww shucks.

No, I get that, and I've been informed of some of the things I'm sure you're talking about, too.

Thx.

I thought all coaches had the same advantage during that time?

So you actually believe that a school that had less money than Alabama was even playing the same game here? Indeed, this is why we have limitations now - to prevent the perpetual dominance of the same 2 or 3 teams.

(It's kind of strange we've reached that point now, but "parity" was what was behind a good portion of the things done for so long, too).

Bryant - by comparison with the modern guys - had the advantage of being able to keep more guys on scholarship than (say) Saban or Dabo does. That's why the rest of my post points out that IN CONTEXT Bryant was the greatest of HIS time - and in part because of what you're saying.

But let's not pretend that Oregon State and Alabama could both give unlimited scholarships and were meeting on anything resembling a level playing field, either. That's why JFK's challenge with the moon program talked about why Rice played Texas.

For starters, thank you for clarifying (I thought that's what you were saying).

But again - what is precise relevance to right now unless the argument is "once a cheat, always a cheat?"

Now....MIGHT Dabo be skirting the rules like a Mafia don? Yeah, I'm sure he could. But someone better give me some better evidence besides "well, he did it back twenty years ago." Keep in mind, I'm NOT advocating that Dabo should replace Saban, I'm just looking at it in the context of the folks dismissing him.

If any old coach could do what he's doing right now in the ACC, why aren't they?

I despise the New England Patriots with the hatred of a thousand suns, but you have to tip your hat to them for what they've done, too. Same with Cam Newton at Auburn - since dollar bills don't throw touchdown passes.

I think that the thing that sets Coach Aw Shucks above the others is his ability to get them to play with a chip on their shoulder. Wasn't it last year when they announced the All-ACC team, in which Clemson absolutely dominated, when all he could talk about was one of his players that was "disrespected" because he was left off the team? They were ranked one or two all season long, heavy favorites in all their games, and all he ever talked about was how Clemson got not respect.

Coach aw shucks will find a random blogger's article that says they aren't that good and then tells his players that "no one" respects them and his players believe it.

Because if you've ever seen behind the curtain at all, you know that every competitive program (and many who aren't) in FBS is cheating.

Couple that with coach aww shucks' "God wants us to win" attitude and it's disgusting. He's just hugh freeze with a more intelligent / elaborate system in place.

If anyone actually believes any serious FBS program is clean, then I guess we should just stop talking about this now. Unpopular fact? Probably. But they all are. Every. Single. One.

Here you go. FBI wire taps where the basketball program is trying to get the dough up to pay Zion Williamson (I think he’s a good player 😉) to come to Clemson.

Absolutely.

And you've said that here more than once before, too.

Several years ago I spoke with a guy who was well-known here (I can't say more or I'll give it away), and he said, "Look, the top 60 programs in the country are absolutely dirty inside and out." He said this basically in the context of telling the NCAA to stuff it.

I also met a guy about 20 years ago who was a walk-on for one of the Vols teams back in the 1960s. He said - serious as could be - that when the game was over it was pretty common for Vols and Tide players to ask how their system was set up and how they "could get more."

He also adored Coach Bryant even after the whole Fulmer mess.

So the "evidence" right now is........you heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend - who might have had every reason to be lying.......

(Also - if we're now going with CA's "every single program" cheats......why does it even matter if Dabo DOES cheat?) The hypocrisy while doing it? I totally get that.

At NO TIME have I "defended" Dabo or any specific thing done - but several of the posts on this thread seem little more than attempts to minimize accomplishment. It's like twisting me pointing out specific things relevant to Nebraska into me saying "Nebraska wasn't really any good," which I've never said.

From the article:

According to assistant basketball coach Steve Smith, who has been on Clemson’s basketball staff since 2012, the Tigers were engaged in attempts to pay star basketball recruit Zion Williamson before he signed with Duke. On the video wiretap, Smith was speaking to former agent Christian Dawkins (who has since been found guilty and convicted for his role in paying players) and an undercover FBI agent when he brought up the success of Clemson’s football program.
“That’s why football is so successful, is if you do it and use resources at Clemson, like you can really keep everything tight,” Smith said on the video wiretap, according to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports.

Clemson assistant basketball coach on an fbi wiretap telling an agent that they can use the resources at Clemson just like the football program to pay Zion Williamson is a little more than “heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend.” The wire tap recordings were used as evidence in a case, which typically means it’s legitimate.

I read the article.

Let me summarize it:

An assistant b-ball coach said something that may or may not have been true trying to get a dazzling b-ball player to come to the school.

The end.

This is not Laremy Tunsil confessing on national television. Again, MIGHT it be true? OF COURSE! But I'm gonna need something more than the word of an assistant b-ball coach who may or may not know what he's talking about.

My opinion - it is true, but it is not proved, so it doesn't matter.

There's a simple answer to this question: they have nailed the QB position the last 8 years. From Watson to Trevor Lawrence is about as good as it gets in college football. Put an above average QB on their team instead of those 2 and they don't sniff the playoffs. Watson (especially) and Lawrence bailed them out of so many games. Of course, they have talent at other positions but the reason they've been as good as they've been and a team like AU hasn't is the QB position..
