Ralph Sampson III

I think it is safe to say that RSIII is going to break the 6'10" mark. If Bama gets him he will be the tallest player in a long while it not ever at Bama. RSIII is a freshman with plenty of growing ahead of him. If he is anywhere close to his fathers height he has at least another 3 or 4 inches to grow.

I have no idea about his weight it is not listed in any of the articles but if he is like his father he will be rail thin. I would guess at 6' 10' he would have to be over 200 lbs right now.

He looks...

amazingly like his dad. It didn't come through on the link, but the pic above the article had an old PR pic of his dad, with his legs and arms spread in a defensive stance. The pic of III was just to the side and the resemblance is striking...

Come on guys... he is a freshman in High School. He has a ton of growing to do.... in girth, height, mentally, etc! I remember alot of kids when they were 14-15 years old who hit that growth spurt in puberty. It just takes a while for the body to even out. Though, I must admit that it is hard to imagine someone being over 6'10" and not weighing more than 200 lbs.

Have we ever had a player under Marks reign that was over 6'10?

We haven't had many since I've been following Bama hoops. Leon Douglas, under C.M. Newton, was 6'10". Mark farmer, under Wimp, was 6'11", but very slow and rarely played. Derrick McKey under Wimp was 6'10". Jeremy Hayes, who played under both David Hobbs and mark, was a legitimate 6'11", wa sprogressing nicely but had his career ended prematurely because of stress fractures in a leg. IMO had it not been for that problem, Hayes would have played in the NBA. He had a big body to go with his height.

Mark seems to recruit players with long arms, and indeed the long wingspans of Chuck Davis and JeMareo Davidson means that they "play" bigger than they are.

The "Samster" was a legitimate 7'4". I remember UAB upsetting UVa ( and it was one of UVa's very few losses).

I also remember the UVa vs. Georgetown game (Sampson vs. Ewing) that was hyped beyond all reasonable expectations by Sports Illustrated and others. Those kids rocked that gym for the full forty minutes.

I was actually living in Honolulu when little tiny Chaminade upset Ralph Sampson and # 1 Virginia. I think they were # 1 or at least very highly ranked and at one point # 1.
