RFK, Jr.: Anti-vax HHS Secretary

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

One thing they need to learn- neurodivergence is not something to be "treated" or cured. Trust me, I know. I am raising an autistic child. We are grateful to have an excellent team of doctors/specialists who guide us and work with her.

The drug Trump plans to promote for autism shows real (and fragile) hope
Leucovorin brings hope as the first potential autism treatment, but with RFK Jr. weighing whether to fast-track approval, scientists worry about trust.

I hope this treatment continues to demonstrate benefits for some autistic children. A bit of good news would be welcome these days.
I'm confused - is autism treatable or not?

I don't have an autistic child so this is a genuine query. These two posts seem diametrically opposed.

Idk if it's treatable, but if a drug is available and shows promise why not give these families something to help. Raising and caring for an austic child is a huge task. I can see where a vitamin deficiency might be a possibility because austic children are highly picky with their foods and environment. Their body indeed maybe rejecting certain foods that would otherwise contribute necessary mineral profile needed through development.

This would be no worse than folks trying to treat themselves with ivermectin for covid...

Not at expert, so take with a grain of NaCl...

Autism isn't treatable in terms of fixing the neurological injury that causes it. We can't induce neuron growth or repair with current medical science. Therefore, we can't cure autism and may never be able to do so.

You can treat the symptoms with medications and behavioral planning and special education so that many of these children do much better over the course of their lives however. Families need support for that to happen.

In about 40% of autistic children there is a deficiency in the folate pathway (folate is vitamin B9 and essential for manufacturing RNA and DNA) and you can bypass this with leucovorin. Research indicates this alleviates some of the behavioral disturbances seen in autistic children, and may help them do better overall. But it isn't permanent and it isn't a cure, and is far from a slam dunk as best I can tell from the literature. The other 60% derive no benefit from this.

It's akin to having high blood pressure. Medication doesn't fix the problem, but can mask the symptoms allowing you to live longer. Exercise and diet can help shift the baseline like a good special education program for autism. But it can't be cured.

Several large observational studies have reported “associations” between frequent or prolonged acetaminophen use during pregnancy and higher rates of neurodevelopmental disorders in children. But experts emphasize that these studies are not conclusive. Other factors, such as underlying illness or genetic predisposition, could also play a role in the development of autism. Until more definitive research is completed, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the CDC continue to recommend acetaminophen as the safest over-the-counter pain reliever for pregnant women.
