"Nearly 35 years removed from his NFL career, Todd is at last no longer the answer to a trivia question. When Tua Tagovailoa was selected No. 5 overall by the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night, he bumped Todd from the record books as the most-recent former Alabama quarterback taken in the first round of the NFL draft.

“It took a long time; I can’t believe it took so long for that to happen,” Todd said via telephone from his home in Florence. "

I followed the Jets as a kid b/c of Richard Todd.

Commenting on his own draft experience:

“I was in Tuscaloosa, I had my own apartment because football season was over and I was a senior,” Todd said. “So I got a call from (Jets head coach) Lou Holtz at probably 8:30 (a.m.) my time. He goes ‘we’re about to take you. We’re not going to have any problem signing you?’ I go ‘no sir.’ And he hung up the phone and I went back to bed. "

Crazy how draft day has changed, huh!?!

Who could forget the 4 interceptions he threw when the Jets were playing at the Dolphins in the AFC Championship game back in 1983. That was a heartbreaking loss for us Jets fans who really had nothing to cheer about since Super Bowl III. I was too little to remember the late 60s and early 70s, but when I was in elementary and middle school in the mid 70s to early 80s they were terrible.
Back in 2009 I hung around after the Homecoming Pep Rally and was able to talk to him for a few minutes, my wife was able to snap a quick picture. A few months later I was a an Alabama alumni association party in NYC and he was there along with some other Alabama football players from the past. I saw a friend of mine at the party and he noticed Richard Todd. I told him come with me and I’ll introduce you. Would you believe he remembered me from a couple of months earlier. It was pretty funny and my friend and I had a good laugh later on.

Jerry Brown and Conley Duncan lived at my apartments and Todd visited occasionally. I remember lighting him up on the basketball court :)

:D
