From the same speech, at the Alabama Football Coaches Association this week, Saban cited Las Vegas Raiders WR Henry Ruggs III, a former Alabama star, and his drunk driving incident that left a woman dead. He explained that if Ruggs had stronger leaders around him, perhaps tragedy could have been averted:

Henry Ruggs has nobody to blame but himself. He was a grown man that made an idiotic decision.

“Now, we were playing with guys that typically didn’t have to play at those positions. The lesson to be learned is there were 3 guys, and I’m not calling out any names, that basically didn’t do the things they needed to do throughout the season because they were frustrated with their circumstance. … They’re frustrated with their circumstance because they’re not playing as much as they want to. They’re outcome oriented, they want to worry about how many balls they catch or how much playing time they get or whatever it is. So they don’t focus every day on being a complete player at their position, and they don’t work in practice and prepare for the games because they say to themselves, ‘Why should I do this? I’m not gonna play anyway.’

“So, we had 3 guys, they all had a significant role in the national championship game, and not 1 of them, not 1, could take advantage of the opportunity that they had, because they never ground through it. They never made themselves the best player they could be. When they got the opportunity, they couldn’t do it. That’s a lesson for everybody. What comes first? Playing time? Or making sure that you’re ready to play and create value for yourself when you get the opportunity?”
Sounds lIke he’s found next year’s motivational theme…

And Georgia fans a dumber than a bag of hammers. Don't go looking at CNS's comments on Twitter. Georgia fans are spamming up every thread. I swear those morons are infinitely worse than Auburn fans ever dreamed about being.
Maybe on the internet they are, but in Montgomery Barn fans are awful. Over half my coworkers are Barn fans so I have to deal with them alot. It was quite odd to me how vocal they were about the NCG when they were so quiet about football in December.

I’m no CNS, but our consulting business is built on the idea of getting clients to focus on processes they can control as opposed to outcomes they can’t (we don’t call it “process,” but you get the point). Literally every one of our competitors focuses on outcomes. I certainly will be using this video is an illustration in our material to our clients, and in my speeches…

True, but Coach Saban was making a point about if someone isn’t strong enough to do the right thing then someone else should step up and make the right decision. We know that Ruggs made a bad decision but the others involved could have stepped in and taken his keys.

Now maybe we know why some of the backups didn't get many game reps to gain experience. They didn't earn reps in practice. Why in the hell should Saban give them game-time reps when they're not doing what they're supposed to do in practice.
Actions have consequences……… and inaction, in this case, also has consequences. Hard lesson for a young guy to learn, but often a valuable one for those willing to learn

Saban wasn’t deferring blame away from Ruggs; it was a condemnation of people not stepping up making unpopular decisions. He never said Ruggs wasn’t to blame; he said if Ruggs had had a friend make the tough decision to take his keys even if it made Ruggs mad, a person’s life would have been saved. His comments are more about the lack of tough love and leadership.

I'm never a fan of throwing your players under the bus, publicly. Surely he's had this talk with the players, privately. That approach sure didn't work with Billingsley so I don't understand going after more players unless the point is to tell them they have no future here (we do need a few more transfers out I think). You have to coach/develop the guys you have if you want them to be ready for the VERY LAST game of the season when you really need them.

What he’s essentially saying is, “The coaches can bring you to the water, but you’re gonna have to drink it for yourself.”

Everyone wants to jump on the coaches, but at some point players have to accept the coaching and the lessons that are given and apply them. The coaches can’t make them take that step. All the coaches can do is give the players every tool to be successful. The players have to grab the success for themselves.

Henry Ruggs can no longer learn from his mistakes that night. However, there were others involved with him that evening, that need to learn from the decisions they made that led to the tragedy. And perhaps Coach was also trying to teach all the other young men and women who may have been listening. I don't think he was shifting blame at all. He was calling out every facet of that fateful evening.
