Safety Clarence Ward commits to Bama!

At 176lbs, he's not moving to OLB. I'm sure the coaches have a more accurate time that they are happy with.

We have a senior on the team now that reported as a freshman at around a 185 lbs. He is now at about 225. These guys have a tendancy to bulk up with muscle weight once they get seriously involved in a college work out regimen. That Senior is Cornelius Wortham. Look at Jawan Garth who also reported around that 185 lbs weight. As a Sophmore he is only at 205 lbs.

I have one major question...why does BamaMag have his

40 time listed at 4.64 and BOL has it at 4.44? That' a fairly drastic difference and I would be quite surpised if a free safety only ran a 4.64 who is 6'1" and 175.

This kid does have some bad history. An October Rivals article says that Sep 22nd Ward was dismissed from La Marque for unspecified reasons. This is probably why LSU dropped their interest in him. However from the most recent Dec Rivals article it appears now that he is a model student at Pensacola. Could be just one of those stupid decisions you make when your young and you learn your lesson. I'm sure Shula and staff know his history and are comfortable with his attitude. I wonder what he did???

RTR

it sounded to me like it was a stubborn coach vs a stubborn kid situation....not completely sure though

40 times arent very accurate

I quit paying attention to them long ago. Terrance Newman who plays for the Cowboys ran a 4.2 at the combine a couple of years ago and that 40 time doesnt equal success. Sure TN is ok but that 4.2 isnt going to get him to the pro bowl. On the other hand Ed Reed ran a high 4.6 and hes (in my opinion) the NFL defensive player of the year. 40 times are difficult to judge because you could have a guy who runs three 4.4s and goes on to run a 4.6 or 4.7.

Didnt Shuan Alexander run a 4.6? I think he did. Remember Rudi Johnson from the barn, he ran a 4.7 and he never got run down.

Looks as though these Recruiting websites need to recheck their info.

One lists him as 6'1" the other as 5'11", which is it? If another instance of over-stating vital statistics, is the 6'1" an overstatement or are both?

LINK

A link to an old Texas article.....Clarence ward info at the very bottom.
Looks like Rivals has their info right.

I would guess he is between 5' 11" and 6' 1" and runs between 4.4 and 4.6 forty. ;) These measurements come from the two most recent articles I could find. The artical above linked say Clarence Ward is a 6'0", 190 pound, 4.4/40. From all accounts he is very talented and a very good commitment for Bama.

player speed and size

I have found alot of embellishment on the recruiting services. Most of these reported speeds and sizes are inflated. I know when I played HS I was clocked with cleats and helmet on grass at 4.75(most likely 4.6 on a track) and was the 4rd fastest player on my team. However 2 of those were the county 220 and 100 meter champs. I know for a fact that many of these times are done on tracks in running shoes and still they take a tenth off their best time. The thing I like about some of the services is when they publish a nike camp numbers. For example, M Simpson is timed at 4.53 which is problably accurate.I bet that 2/3 of these guys if you take thier services reported times are all under 4.5 which is most likely BS.I still think most coaches check out the kids in camps and get their actual times.....which again why I believe it is more important to see who has offered a prospect not thier star rating.

When Maurice Greene ran a 9.79 100 meters, his time at 40 yards - 4.38 seconds (don't say he was pacing himself for 100 meters  ).

The NFL times are SO bogus - they run through traps, thus taking out reaction time.

I'm sure he's fast enough for the coaching staff.

Remember, these are 18 year olds. A lot of them still aren't fully grown; plus, with a weight regime, he'll be at 200 lbs quick whether he wants to or not.

Dont get wrapped around the axle about forty times...

I really think every player has three speeds: track (or times) speed, game speed, and adrenaline speed (see George Teague chasing L. Thomas in sugar bowl). Speed is frequently overrated

This is a big deal

I heard CMS was down here to see Ward last week. I went to the game and this guy is a good cover corner. He shut a couple guys (all stars) down. This is the type player who, hopefully will make an immediate impact as a freshman. He wanted to play right away and it looks like that's what coach has in mind.

If he runs a 4.6 forty, he still runs it 0.2 seconds than Marcus Spencer, who started there for Alabama for parts of four years and ended up with a handful of NFL camp invites.

Charlie Peprah is probably close to a 4.6, too.

A 4.6 40 is faster than most seem to think it is. Count .1 or .2 of a second and then realize that is how far apart they would be if they were racing. 80% of football isnt played at sprint speed anyways. Now if he can run a 4.3 while backpeddaling, THEN we got ourselves a corner ;)

Technique is 90% of making a good corner, speed is 10% of making a GREAT corner. Speed should only be used to correct a mistake at that position.

BOL is saying that there was a misunderstanding

involving the incident in Texas. They are saying that Ward will get his fourth star back and is possibly the best signee in the class. I watched his junior film a few minutes ago (Yes, I'm a recruiting insomniac.), and I was very impressed. They should have some senior film on him before too long.

40 meter mark and 40 yard mark aren't the same thing. 10 meters is 11 yards...roughly. When you're down to the hundredth of a second, it makes a difference.

For some reason Jess's comment about the speed of Marcus Spencer reminded me of the run back by Lee Ozmit. 103 yards or so?

Sssss Lllllll Ooooooo Wwwwww

I have a local attorny friend (Aubie) that went to law school with Ozmit. He said that Ozmit was a really great guy.
