Scrimmage, depth chart, etc.

I read earlier in the week that Alonzo was working at the Star position with the first group and I seen a video with him grouped with Rashad, Javy, Barron, and Kareem.

If you were a sportswriter, you'd be part of the group that CNS has been calling out this week. :D He's been saying not to try to guess the depth chart from any particular group practicing together. Barron is not first string, at least not now - Woodall will likely start. And Zo doesn't have the nickel sewn up at this point, although that may change before Clemson. Part of the reason is that corner is one of the hardest spots to learn for CNS' defense (or any other, for that matter), and AL struggled with the mental aspect some this summer. And Arenas has too much ability to keep him off the field. At the slot, we have Hanks, Scott, Maze, and Jackson, who is currently first string. Hanks has a shoulder (almost well) and BJ has a tweaked ham. Jackson is no slouch. If you put Javier there, how much PT does he get? And that's the reason Maze has been practicing at PR and KR - Arenas will almost certainly have the CB spot nailed down. Zo will see the field soon, but he's not going to be first string for Clemson (I hope). :D
 
This is great to have some depth and talent coming in but Brian Motley is getting left out of the mix either in the O-line or D-line.

Motley provided quality playing time last year and he was quick of the ball as well hate not to see him on the field somewhere.

BM has battled injury problems his whole career. Now, I'm afraid, he's battling a depth problem, with a whole lot more talent on both sides to beat out.

Earle I was talking about Javy defending the slot receiver lol...... I had a smiley face after I made the comment about Alonzo in regards to the video, I know what Coach said thats why I took it with a grain of salt!! I do think that Zo will have the nickel spot locked up by Clemson with Javy starting. Clemson runs alot of 3 and 4 wide sets so essentially the nickel back would start in the game in my opinion!!
 
LOL... OK, I understand. I guess there was so much Javvy to the slot talk earlier, I thought that's where you wanted to move him. I hope Zo does progress enough to nail down the nickel by Clemson...

Please expound a little more on your assessment of the offensive line. Do you feel that it's a good thing at this point that the young guys haven't been able to move up the depth chart (especially at RT), or is it a sign that the youngsters aren't ready to contribute as quickly as we'd hoped they could?

I hope you're not saying that Maze may replace Arenas at KR/PR. Arenas is just too valuable in that spot to take him out and just use him on defense. I wouldn't mind seeing Maze AND Arenas on KR's.....but I want #28 out there for punts. He's simply an unbelievable weapon there. And with someone who has such great vision, acceleration, and escapability---I've always thought we should have a small offensive package for Arenas. He so good with the ball in his hands, there's no way he wouldn't be a success there. Guess it would just be too hard to have him playing in all three phases of the game. What a great player.
 
TBF, I was a bit startled when I heard that Maze was getting a look back there. However, I'm being told that Maze also has some Prothro-type moves, also. I'd hate to be the opposing special teams coordinator and look at a combination of Maze and Arenas on kickoffs...

Any word on whether they tried Bj Scott as a returner and what he looked like if they did? Just watching him he seems to be very very quick with his cuts and gets to top speed pretty quick too. Don't know about his vision, instincts, or even kick catching ability but he seems to have the athletic skills top make noise as a returner as well.

Scott is rather limited for now . He pulled his hamstring Friday :(

Ever since we signed this kid I've heard he has some sick moves on the field. If he can be an added bonus to our KR/PR team with Arenas we'll be in great shape. That way we can use B.Scott on offense and not have to expense his energy in other places.
 
As expected, looks like Julio has looked pretty impressive, especially in the scrimmage on saturday. Just a gut feeling on my part, but something tells me he will win out against Alexander for SE in the end, though honestly as good as both of them are both will see significant PT. I see both of them playing early and often.

Again, he was running routes and catching passes today. It must not be serious because as cautious as CNS is about injuries, I can't imagine he wouldn't at least be wearing a black jersey if it was a problem.
