It is an offense similar to the offense that Miami runs. However, just because certain formations look alike and certain plays look alike, it doesn't mean the offenses are anywhere near the same.
Numerous other teams run the same style of offense in the NFL, but even when Shula was calling these same plays in the NFL they were not working.
The most successful offensive coordinators have the ability to call the right play at the right time. They have incredible offensive timing.
If you are actually interested in understanding the difference in Miami and Alabama offensively, just tape a game of each. It's not that hard.
Break down the plays, play by play, if you have the time to do so, and you will see that these are two completely different offenses.
Mike Shula has had seven years of legitimate playcalling experience to put on display what he is capable of as a PLAY CALLER. He has not been successful.
It just makes sense for Shula to give up play calling duties and bring in an experienced guy that has had previous success.

If it walks, quacks, and looks like a duck its a duck.

He didn't have the talent on O for it to work. He had a D minded coach who came from the Gene Stalling school of football.

What about Homer Smith? Was he a good OC or not? When he was here the 1st time we had the best O in the SEC. Stallings hired hime and we were not any better than when Mal Moore was there. Did Homer forget how to call plays? Did he lose his ability to call the right play at the righut time? NO! He had a coach who wanted a safe O game plan. Remind you of any another OC that you metioned in the pros whos playcalling you claim was bad?

There is no different in what both are tring to do. They both rely on the pwer running game. They both like to be able to run right at you. Neither run any options and do very very little pulling with the line. Neither run a buch of different formations or try to trick plays. Both run very simple to coach and learn O's. The difference right now is Miami has better talent right now. mostly on the O-line.

Lets look at his 3 years at Bama
03. he was hired 100 days before the season started. Not 100 days of pratice. he had about 3 weeks to pyt in a brand new O. Nobody and I mean nobody can do this. I cant ever think of another situation any other coach has had to do this.
04. All the injuries killed the O. Once again nobody and I mean nobody is going to have very good O with 3rd stringer's starting in the most important postion QB. He wasn't a very good QB. We became a team that had to rely on just running the ball and you cant beat good teams in this day and time with out a passing game.
05. He had a team with young O-line and IMO not a lot of talent. What did he do? He went 9-2. To me thats amazing.
I think you have to wait until he has time to have the equal talent all 4 postions on O (QB, RB, WR and O-line) as the other powers in the SEC. The UF's ,UT's, LSU's, UGA's and then lets ee what he can do.

Shula's O is simple to coach and learn. Its not a hard one to stop when you dont have a lot of talent across the board. Like I said it's not a trick 'em type of O. Maybe a Charlie Wesis type of play calling might have worked better this year but we dont have Charle Wesis type of OC. We have Mike Shula. He's going to do it his way. Like I've said before it has worked at othe places in the past. it works at other places right now and it will work at Bama. He's just got to get his type of players and I think they hes getting closer to doing that.
