I've been thinking about this for some time now, but I'm wondering if anyone here can name some coaches that have been successful who had a personality like that of CMS.

Any ideas?

Personality - I think there is a misconception that just because you are controlled and understand how to act "in front" of the media that they makes you a weak person or someone who can be run over. I don't think that most of us have a clue what CMS is like in person because the Bama coach has to be in so many situations where they have to be the "face" of the program.

I would really like to know if anyone knows if CMS is always the same or if he gets fired up and gets on to people when the need arises;

I don't think that control should be misinterpreted as meekness, unless it actually is, and I would be interested to see who actually knows this?????

good post.. i'd also like to know the answer to this

When Ray Perkins came to Alabama he went to dinner with a certain reporter and gave him a candid interview. That reporter published a scathing attack on Perkins. Ray Perkins hated the media and never trusted them from that day forward. That had a lot to do with Ray Perkins' personality.

I think someone like CMS could do well if he has the right coaches under him. With a few tweaks he may be a winner. CMS doesn't have to do all the butt chewing...he just needs to see the overall picture and put his stamp of approval on it.

There is nothing wrong with Shula's personality. It seems to me that the problem is with his loyalty to his assistant coaches. I have always felt the key to a great head football coach is having a group of great assistant coaches working with him. And I honestly don't believe Coach Shula has the assistants he needs to be successful. If he doesn't find the right people to work with these players, he will not ever be successful anywhere, whether he's in Tuscaloosa or not.

It's been in the newspapers before, at halftime of some of the games where the team was REALLY flat or playing poorly, Ole Miss last year and Duke or FIU this year maybe, some of the players have stated that Shula was quite animated.

Bamafan in BFKY summed it up, just because Shula is composed on the sidelines doesn't mean he is always like that. Control in front of the cameras doesn't mean that Shula is meek.

In 2004 he was very emotional on the sidelines. It seems like everytime the TV cameras were on him he was letting out some words you don't teach to your children.

Good observation. Are we to think that maybe the "controlled" personality doesn't transfer well to the college game?

Well, my thinking on this is coaching in the NFL , a more passive personality may be okay for the HC or assistant coaches. That does not bode well in coaching college teams IMO. If you are OR appear to be aloof, passive, detached, that translates back to the team, therefore making it harder for the team to play with intensity.

NFL players don't necessarily need a lot of emotion from the coaches to go out on the field and play to win. Their paychecks is their motivation. It's different with college players.

I was thinking the same thing and was wondering if his wife washed his mouth out with soap or someone told him to watch the language.

Who. coincedentally, is having the worst three year stretch of his career, but who also had a decent year last year. Freaky.:rolleyes:

He came out of retirement eight years after being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. If he never wins another game, he's still one of the greats.

BTW, He's going to start Jason Campbell Sunday. We'll see how the rest of the 'skins season goes.
