So I've recently decided to look at buying a smoker. I don't want to get anything too expensive, and this is just going to be for home use, so there's no need to get a really large one. I'm pretty much completely clueless on what to be looking for. Do any of yall have any advice on something in the less than $400 range that's good for entry level smoking? Any help is appreciated!

I recommend a Brinkman "R2D2" smoker. You can find them at Lowes and probably Home Depot. I bought one several years ago for about $50. You can't beat them for the price and they do an excellent job. Another good thing about them is they're highly portable so they're suitable for tailgating also.

18.5" Weber Smoky Mountain can be found on Amazon for ~$250. A little more than the brinkman, but i think it is better better built and the temp control is better. You can do about 4 butts, or 6 racks of ribs, or 4 whole chickens at a time on that size. I have one and love it. There are good online resources too if you are new to smoking like here.

Lowe's has the Char Griller Kamado Akorn at $300. A scaled down version of the Big Green Egg, one of my neighbors has one and seems to like it a lot.
