This whole Spurrier mess has either been a huge smokescreen to cover the real candidate or Mal is bungling the whole thing. Maybe we are to believe that this whole Spurrier thing was a grand diversion to buy time for someone like Stoops who is preparing for the Big 12 Championship. Or maybe Mal is telling the truth and he really hadn't contacted anyone and does not have a time frame. He just contacted SOS who has turned him down and now goes to candidate # two ( Stoops or Rod) and on down the line. As I recall that is how we ended up with Price. If that is the case then we are in bad shape. We should have made contact with several candidates to test the water :conf2: ,had an informal contract in place along with a plan B, etc., before ever firing Shula. I initially thought that that was the case but now am not too sure. I am starting to believe that Mal has just formulated a list and is going down it summarilly. Mods, please tell me that I am wrong.

Excellent post.

I'd like to say "unbelievable" to this post but I can't. How can you trash a guy for going after the best? If SOS doesn't come here (and I never thought he would) it's not going to be Mal's fault.

I foresee a lot of "chicken little" posts like this. You just can't please some folks.

Lets review what we do know... The term "squat" comes to mind. Except that we fired a coarch w/out apparently any reasonable assurance that our first pick would accept.

This isn't a "chicken little" post and he's not saying that Mal wouldn't have gone after the best had he done it the way he's describing. But, if you're a coach at another school, and you're doing a dang good job, would you want an AD coming to you saying, "Well, we want the best. But, the best said know, so we settled for #2. Then he said no, etc. Now we'd like to offer it to you." And obviously that's not verbatim, but you get my point. You can "test the waters" and contact numerous candidates while still going after "the best candidate."

There's nothing wrong with questioning the AD and the administrations system. The only thing is, we have no idea what it is...

I am as frustrated with this process as everyone else seems to be but after 2 days of reading rumor, inuendo, and speculation that is posted as truth from fans, insiders, or those "connected" and how quickly those people change direction in their focus from supportive to mob like how could we expect to get any quality coach to come here. The biggest reason it seems that any "big name" coach would second guess the alleged offerings from Alabama is that we turn on them as fast as we fall in love with them with high hopes of glory.
One minute Mal Moore is doing a great job then we don't get what we want so we should fire the whole bunch based on speculation on what may have happened. I doubt many on this board knows everything going on but we are quick to fill in the blanks in the absence of answers and promote it as truth.
I do not blame any coach for taking their time to think this through. I became an Alabama fan even though I live in Tennessee because of how classy I always thought Bama fans were.
Lately it seems we are all rabid. If you don't want to get bit, don't run with the rabid dogs.
It's amazing what desparation can do to people. Let us not forget who we are.

Roll Tide whoever the coach may be.:BigA:

In this day and age, I don't know if it's possible to have any kind of contact without someone finding out. Under normal circumstances, I would understand about being someone's 2nd choice.

However, I don't believe that being mentioned in the same breath as Spurrier is a bad thing. IMO, I don't think this will be a deal-breaker when it comes to RR.

Many of the same people that will go nuts if SOS doesn't come here are the same ones who would want to make Mal Moore walk the plank if he didn't try and hire him. It quickly turns into a no-win situation.

Wait...I thought everything posted here by everyone was true & factual. You're saying some of it is not? Man, am I depressed.

<sarcastic humor alert>

Only negative things are true and come from reliable sources; positive things are rumors and come from unreliable sources .:p_conf:

I think people need to ask themselves if they REALLY thought Spurrier was coming in the first place. And Stoops? Come on people wake up! If you're Bob Stoops you've won the NC after bringing the program back to one of the elite in the country. Their tradition is as deep as ours. Stoops basically has anything he wants in Oklahoma and he gets paid well. People love him there. Why would he dump all that?

I think some deep breathing and logical examination is in order.

This has to be the most uninformed and clueless post of the day. Bungling??!?!?! I'm not sure how much more MM could have done to get SS to sign with Bama. Black mail him? Kidnap his wife? Threaten to burn his house down?

Offering SS the most incredibly generous offer in college football history, I'd say MM did ALL that he could do.
