Smokescreen or Bungling!

Well I trust you runtheoption22 but I am having a problem with controlling myself. I have a 27 year old and a 17 year old and I preach to them about self control and here I am.

This whole Spurrier mess has either been a huge smokescreen to cover the real candidate or Mal is bungling the whole thing. Maybe we are to believe that this whole Spurrier thing was a grand diversion to buy time for someone like Stoops who is preparing for the Big 12 Championship. Or maybe Mal is telling the truth and he really hadn't contacted anyone and does not have a time frame. He just contacted SOS who has turned him down and now goes to candidate # two ( Stoops or Rod) and on down the line. As I recall that is how we ended up with Price. If that is the case then we are in bad shape. We should have made contact with several candidates to test the water :conf2: ,had an informal contract in place along with a plan B, etc., before ever firing Shula. I initially thought that that was the case but now am not too sure. I am starting to believe that Mal has just formulated a list and is going down it summarilly. Mods, please tell me that I am wrong.

You're wrong... on several counts.

It is called searching.
By the very nature of the word it implies there are areas of doubt
Other universities have gone thru this. Ohio State's present coach came from
Youngstown (Not exactly a powerhouse name or reputation) Ohio caught lightning in a bottle. Maybe just maybe we will be that lucky this go around. I will say my patience is running out with the present powers that be. But I am an Alabama fan of long, long, long standing so I have no patience:tongue:

I hope that that is the case. When i hear that we previously had an deal with Butch Davis, then he backed out, so we offer Frank Beamer, but he does not want to be thought of as # 2, etc. It worries me. It seems that alot of people are upset by the word " bungling". How would you characterize the former situation with Butch Davis and Frank Beamer. North Carolina had a deal done with him this time around. Signed , sealed, delivered. I do not want us to wait around for Saban only to have Miami snatch up Rodriguez and us left to continue down the list again. To call this a "chicken little" post is ridiculous considering our recent history with coaching hires. I truly want to believe that contact has been made previously and Mal has had a firm agreement with Sabans agent for some time now. The Spurrior thing was just a distraction. Mods, we do not have the inside info that you do. From the outside looking in it's "here we go again". I, like many who love the Tide, am tired of all being "close". We almost signed Tebow. We almost beat UT. I do not want to say " we almost got Spurrior, or Saban, or Rod".

This has to be the most uninformed and clueless post of the day. Bungling??!?!?! I'm not sure how much more MM could have done to get SS to sign with Bama. Black mail him? Kidnap his wife? Threaten to burn his house down?

Offering SS the most incredibly generous offer in college football history, I'd say MM did ALL that he could do.

He could have had someone do the negotiations prior to the firing of Shula.Properly gauged his interest. Judged if the interest was sincere. If it was then you put an informal contract together. If not you dont waste time asking. Then you dont look like you chased Spurrior and he turned you down.

How do you know this wasn't done? Also, there is a difference from "sincere interest" and "I'll sign on the dotted line." Did Spurrier have sincere interest? Definitely seems to be the case to some degree. Did he have enough to sign on the dotted line? The answer is one of two things... one, he didn't. Two, an actual contract was never tendered. BTW, I love all the assumptions that people are currently making about MM and "the process" right now.

O.K. from what i undestand from reading the board this morning. Neinas is negotiating with Saban and Rod. Maybe an either or deal. Maybe Saban is a done deal. Why the smokescreen? Why make overtures to Spurrier? How does that help the real negotiations? Distraction. Buying time. Inquiring minds want to know.

There are MANY reasons why the process possibly has taken this route. One of the most interesting keys to finding answers, however, is to examine who floated rumors out regarding Spurrier. If it came from Spurrier's side (Sexton), it tells you one thing. If it came from our side, it tells you another. Regarding Saban, remember that Sexton represents both he and Spurrier... thus, I think you can assume (dangerous word) that anything he did would be a "win-win" for both Spurrier and Saban. Outside of that, I would direct you to the "mods and time" thread... a lot of insightful information there that helps answer a lot of questions.

BR is exactly right guys. I have defended Tider in another thread and I will defend CMM here.

Smokescreen is the appropriate word. First of all to assume that the University would trust Sexton is beyond belief. Second what better way to have informal talks with your real candidate and it not be known, than if everyone is running to the other side of town trying to get the scoop on a leak you distributed yourself. Before we start throwing stones at CMM let's see how this process plays out and who is announced as Coach next week.........maybe.

O.K. so Sexton stirs the pot to negotiate a new contract for SOS. To get SC off their butts. I get that. All the while working on a deal with Saban also. Brilliant actually. Did we actually have a "face to face " with Spurrier?

A face to face to offer the job would be "NO".

No offense, but did anyone really think Stoops was even a remote possibility?
I hate to agree publicly with a Vol, but I have never understood why Stoops was ever in the picture. I have enough respect for the Sooners that I would be frankly stunned for the OU coach to leave for Tuscaloosa. Unless the difference in money was truly gargantuan, I just don't see it.

I would like to know if Spurrier knew he was used as a smokescreen. Perhaps using it to his advantage?
If the leaks came from Sexton's side, he certainly knew... because Sexton will not do that on behalf of his client w/o permission. Now, if leaks were on our side, it's tougher to discern. I'm sure he's figured it out by now though.

And the roles of Bill Oliver, Finebaum, and Scott Moore releasing information? Were they part of the ruse or were they given "inside information" and expected them to run with it?

It also seems possible that there is or may well have been some element of accuracy to many of the rumours circulating. In other words, perhaps Coach Saban did express an earlier interest. The Dolphins began winning some games and maybe he truly didn't care for the way Coach Shula was released. Now, perhaps, there is some renewed interest in returning to the college ranks. Perhaps Coach Spurrier was contacted and was genuinely curious about the possibility of coming to Alabama and getting his own "grotto". Perhaps he spoke to his family; thought it over and decided he wasn't truly interested, although he had been willing to listen to an offer. My point is, many of the statements and conjectures may not be outright lies or deceptions by these coaches----it just seems to be a very fluid process with many different changes of course. I don't think we have any choice but to be patient and let these events run their natural course.

Spurrier turned down more money at USC when he was first hired. He was offered $1.5 mil but he only took $1.25 so the rest could be used for assistant coaches and for the women's sports. When I found that out I knew that whatever we offered him, he would turn down unless he was unhappy at USC for some reason.

I don't buy into the smokescreen theory completely although I'm sure that is part of it. My guess is that its 50/50 smokescreen/bungle....
