Smokescreen or Bungling!

O.K. so Sexton stirs the pot to negotiate a new contract for SOS. To get SC off their butts. I get that. All the while working on a deal with Saban also. Brilliant actually. Did we actually have a "face to face " with Spurrier?

No face to face and reguardless of what you hear there was no contract on the table.

I hate to agree publicly with a Vol, but I have never understood why Stoops was ever in the picture. I have enough respect for the Sooners that I would be frankly stunned for the OU coach to leave for Tuscaloosa. Unless the difference in money was truly gargantuan, I just don't see it.

The Stoops rumor, heck maybe his agent wants more money for him too. Heck, get his name circling in the UA mix as well, the Sooner braintrust breaks out the checkbook. That's all I can see as to the reason why his name is being mentioned. I mean after all he lost his QB, lost AP, and still made it to the Big 12 championship, and now UA is allegedly considering him for their vacancy. Show me the money!

And the roles of Bill Oliver, Finebaum, and Scott Moore releasing information? Were they part of the ruse or were they given "inside information" and expected them to run with it?

When you have something you want put out for everyone to know and yet make it seem like it's a secret don't you tell the people you know can't keep a secret or shall we say have that info leaked to them.

I have to raise the question, "Is Spurrier still as good as he was at Florida?"
Yes, he did an outstanding job while he has the HC at UF, but does he still have "it" in him? South Carolina was at near the bottom rung when he took over and he has brought them back up a notch or two, but does he really have the drive, ambition & motivation to bring Bama back up to where we want to be?

I am as frustrated with this process as everyone else seems to be but after 2 days of reading rumor, inuendo, and speculation that is posted as truth from fans, insiders, or those "connected" and how quickly those people change direction in their focus from supportive to mob like how could we expect to get any quality coach to come here. The biggest reason it seems that any "big name" coach would second guess the alleged offerings from Alabama is that we turn on them as fast as we fall in love with them with high hopes of glory.
One minute Mal Moore is doing a great job then we don't get what we want so we should fire the whole bunch based on speculation on what may have happened. I doubt many on this board knows everything going on but we are quick to fill in the blanks in the absence of answers and promote it as truth.
I do not blame any coach for taking their time to think this through. I became an Alabama fan even though I live in Tennessee because of how classy I always thought Bama fans were.
Lately it seems we are all rabid. If you don't want to get bit, don't run with the rabid dogs.
It's amazing what desparation can do to people. Let us not forget who we are.

Roll Tide whoever the coach may be.:BigA:

Now, THAT'S an excellent post ! Couldn't agree more... or is it Moore.

No rabidness here. I'm as cool as a cucumber about this decision. I would much rather wait and get the right guy. I didn't believe the Spurrier stuff anyway. I don't believe there's much to the Saban stuff either. I believe that Rodriguez is mulling over options, maybe Paul Johnson too.
But I have confidence in Mal Moore to do what is right for the University. Too much credit has been placed in completely unsubstantiated rumors lately. Some get carried away with their enthusiasm. Then when the completely unsubstantiated rumor turns out to be, well, an unsubstantiated rumor, the rumor mongers fall into the depths of depression.
Relax, take a deep breath. I would guess that we'll have a coach by early next week.

YES. Can't judge SOS by his 2-year stint at the Redskins. They had a Hall-of-Famer caliber coach before him (Schottenheimer) who was unable to win there and brought in a first ballot Hall-of-Fame coach (Gibbs) after him who has been unable to win there. The franchise is a mess. The fact that in between these two, a College Football Hall-of-Fame coach was also unable to win only shows that it's the franchise ownership that is the problem.

Maybe SOS can succeed in the NFL and maybe he can't, but his performance at Washington did nothing to answer that question.
