So ... Quarterbacks

Early last year I wondered if Sims played scared to death of making a turnover and it affected him badly. I would like to extrapolate that to this year, but both of our QBs have proven willing to throw late into double coverage, so that doesn't seem to be it. Coker, in particular, did not seem to be having very much fun on Saturday.

Hoping for a good week of practice.

Not popular here but FWIW I agree.
I don't, he needs to develop. By the way, a loss to Ole Miss doesn't ruin Alabama's chances in a playoff, in fact it doesn't change it all that much, just takes away a margin of error.

I think Barnett should be given a shot at the job next season, but he needs to learn a lot before feeding him to those SEC defenses. I mean do you want a kid his age getting hit like Jake has been?

Like I said. Not popular here.

It's football for crying out loud. But I think he's got enough moxie to avoid the big hit with his feet.

I just think BB is probably the best qb on the roster but CNS rarely lets a young guy learn on the fly.

JMO.

If I remember correctly, CLK recruited Barnett. A hunch is CLK did so knowing he was going to be here to rep the rewards. If so, we may have him for 2 more years. I'm thinking we get another Barnett type QB next class and then the table is set for the run. Look at Ohio State, they have the table set. We did have it set and won a bunch of games and titles. We just lack a few key pieces. This year is hopeful of a team getting better and better and maybe we get by some close ones. Don't know if we have the luck this year or not, but this weekend will only give us a hint. I think we survive 1 loss, but early would be better than later. RTR. Barnett looks to be a good'en.

If Coach Saban thought Blake Barnett was the best option in winning football games this year, he would be starting. Same goes for Cornwell, Morris etc.

Here is a question for some of you forum veterans......

I look around the College landscape and I see teams plugging in and playing Freshman QB's. It happens every year. Look at Rosen right now at UCLA. It happens at Baylor and at TCU too. Ohio State does it. So does a few other teams. They plug in a Freshman QB and don't even blink an eye and they succeed doing it.

So the question is, if Barnett is as good as people say, then why not play him? Is it our offensive system? Is it Saban not trusting a Freshman QB?

If Barnett were playing for Baylor, TCU or one of these other teams, would he be starting this season and putting up good numbers?

I'm just seeing a lot of rules going on around the College Football world right now that do not seem to apply to us when it comes to overall offensive philosophy and the QB position. Maybe we have an antiquated way of thinking now when it comes to these things? Maybe the old way of grooming a Freshman QB isn't the way to go anymore and just plug and play? QB's coming out of HS these days are a lot more prepared then what they used to be.

Or is it really as simple as Barnett just not being ready yet? Which begs the question, would he have been ready at TCU, Oregon or Baylor under similar circumstances? So really, if not now, then when?

I haven't posted since I thought Julio might go to Ohio St. I'm a old football coach that was a DC here in Virginia. I like to think I know a little about football but I am certain some have forgotten more than I will ever know. With that said I would like to add my 2 cents or 1 cent as the case may be.
Coker needs confidence. He has all the intangibles to be a top notch QB! His head is probably the issue at this point. He has to look over his shoulder constantly. I say this because some kids respond to yelling, some to praise, some to kindness, some to friendship, you get my point. With that said, when the coaches find the right button to hit I have no doubt he will flourish. He has all the God given talent in the world, he needs to believe and know this first and foremost. When that light bulb goes off and the pressure falls away you will see what others have talked about. I hope and pray if the players read this they know that through struggles come growth and competition breeds excellence. Coker will be excellent come Saturday. I believe, without a doubt. Take the bull by the horns young man, play fearless, let your teammates carry you when things seem to fall apart and be there when they call on you. We are about to see a exponential growth and this discussion will be a afterthought. I have seen a ton of raw talent in this old mans life and rarely have I seen God given talent that has yet to be fully unleashed. Roll Tide Boys! It's going to be a good weekend. My old man always said "Dance with the girl that brought you." I will dance with Henry all night but Coker may be a fine dancing partner as the season progresses.
I have not seen doom and gloom for a 2-0 team in a long time. Lets BELIEVE!

Concerning indeed. If Coker looked jittery yesterday, I can't imagine what he'll look like Saturday. The guy obviously works hard but he just doesn't seem to be able to put consistent, decisive throws together. My opinion but if he is the man this year, Bama loses a couple.
ESPN's FPI rankings show the Tide Losing at least 3 games, including upcoming Ole Miss game... PUNCH HERE

I agree with this. Coker is indecisive. He lacks confidence. It is quite noticeable to me. Whether Coker or someone else the horns of the bull have to be grabbed. Someone has to take control. There's no time to wait for someone to tell you to do it. Besides, Saban has already said someone needs to.

Great post!! I don't about Cokers confidence but from this post my confidence has been elevated.:)

I could be completely wrong in my thought process but I feel like the majority of quarterbacks we recruit these days come out of spread systems. The recruiting sites base their style on how much they run or how much they stay in the pocket giving them their title of dual threat or pocket passer. Now some of these guys are going to be talented no matter what the system their in but that isn't the norm in most cases. I feel like our pro-style system how ever much I love it, doesn't make an easy transition for these kids coming out of high school. I believe Barnett has all the talent in the world but learning to take a snap under center and then read the different coverages is a huge learning curve. I do agree with the post mentioned above that if Barnett were to be at a TCU, Oregon, Auburn or another spread style offense it would be just a plug and play and they wouldn't miss a beat because that's what they're being taught on a high school level now days. I think we might have more success finding a lesser talent that played in a pro-style system but could come right in and play right away with great players surrounding them. JMHO

Honestly though, how often do we take snaps from under center these days?

Nice to see a better eye for it than me kinda thinks the same thing. Coker's biggest battles are going on between his ears and sometimes it leaks out into "physical" things like bad throws and poor decisions. I do believe that if he gets his mind right that he'll be fine...but the little things I've seen thus far just have me worried a good bit. We shall see!

I think Saturday is a big test for Coach Lane Kiffin. He has clearly shown the ability to scheme around his own team's strength and avoid weaknesses, but he has occasionally gotten too cute and forced playcalls that weren't there. Do we get brilliant Lane or head scratching Lane ? He can really affect the success of our QB with his calls.
