finebaum is saying absolutely nothing new or informative in this statement, so there is no reason to freak out.
Didn't he say, just yesterday, that he would stake his entire reputation on Saban not going to Texas?

He is also one of the people that said Saban would NEVER go to Texas - but now he remains silent. Funny when I moved to Tuscaloosa in 1981 no Bama fans liked him (I think he was newspaper back then). Now he has come 180 and Auburn fans hate him. He certainly has figured out how to play to his audience.

Edit to ask the question: Does Finebaum EVER say anything new or informative?

He likes to toss the Barners a bone every once in a while. They eat that "Saban to Texas" stuff up.

Doubt Finebuam knows much more than some here know.

But I do think the has developed a geniune respect for CNS over the last few years and it would be to Finebaums benefit if he stays.

However, if CNS bails and goes to UT, I think Finebaum will rake him over the coals for it. JMO.

These are just some late-night musings. I, like Jess, had a "go" from all sources that the extension was all but a done deal. It appears that was not the case. Although not so public, we went through a similar episode last year.
Presumably, you were asked to keep quiet last year about the contract negotiations because, IIRC, you never mentioned anything about it.

Yet, in the past few days, you, Jess, and now Finebaum have been cleared by sources to put the contract extension thing out in the public. I could be misreading things, but what that sounds like to me is that UA administration has gotten tired of all the Saban-to-Texas chatter over the course of the last year. Allowing news of the contract negotiations to leak out could be UA's way of putting pressure on Saban to take action one way or another.

Everyone that doesn't pull for Texas will. EVERYONE

No one will feel sorry for Alabama, but Saban's name will be mud for the rest of his life. And don't think that Saban doesn't care. He said in the 60 minutes piece that his statements about Alabama while at Miami were one of the biggest mistakes of his life.

He isn't going anywhere.

Or… it could be to further cement what could possibly become the greatest recruiting class ever put together in CF history… no?

Look… news on all this stuff isn't being driven by UA. Nor do I believe we somehow "lit the fuse" in order to see how the dynamite would explode… meaning we somehow began this deal and are sitting back watching it play out. Obviously, a lot of this is being driven by UT… and one has to ask the question of "why?" Is it really to get CNS to Austin… or is it to oust Mack Brown and the current administration… or something else besides that?

I think you're spot on here. No one loves Alabama and there'll be no sympathy for our plight, but everyone hates Texas too with all their money and arrogance. Whatever accomplishments he's had will be tainted by that reputation as well - the reputation of being a liar. Like I've said before, people can sort of understand a coach getting hammered with a constant barrage of questions about future plans and lying about them when he's not ready to reveal his plans. But when you spell it out over and over and then your wife says definitively 'We're staying", that's a whole 'nuther ball of poo.

Two thoughts:

First, this could absolutely be a ploy to get Brown down the road. Saban might not be in play at all - just a shiny object to dangle in front of the PTB at Texas who have strong relationships with Brown. (He has many backers) Once Mack is out and it becomes clear that Saban isn't coming they can move on to other candidates.

Second, if the above were so, Saban would not necessarily respond to the media firestorm. He does not like to respond to this kind of thing and will generally only do so if cornered. Sure, that makes Alabama folks uncomfortable, but don't think that Saban is above making people squirm every once in a while. After all, the people who think he might leave for Texas are really questioning his integrity, aren't they? I mean, he just said that he isn't going anywhere a few weeks ago.

According to CBS, Alabama approached Saban prior to the Iron Bowl about the extension to keep him the highest paid coach. Link

Alabama approached Nick Saban's camp before the Auburn game last month, interested in reworking his contract, a well-placed University of Alabama official with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com.

The approach was not in response to speculation about Saban's rumored interest in the Texas job, speculation that was re-ignited amid Tuesday's reports suggesting the end is near for Mack Brown in Austin. According to the source, Alabama is prepared to keep Saban as the country’s highest-paid coach.

"He's been at the top of the market and we want to keep it that way," the source said.

This is becoming the Internet version of jr high:

"I'm going with Jenna but I like Alice. Don't tell anybody."

"Hey, Slim likes Alice."

"We'll I've always like Jenna so if he dumps Alice..."

"No, don't say nothing."

"Hey, Alice, Slim thinks you're awesome but first he's gotta break up with Jenna."

"We'll Jenna is my friend and if he breaks up with her I'll never speak to him again."

Blah blah blah
