It wouldn't shock me. My question would then be how does it effect Auburn in their bowl game? I'm sure Malzahn would stay on and coach the game - would he be as focused? Probably so and likely wouldn't make a difference I guess. It would crush AU in the future though. There is no replacement to Malzahn. If they hired outside of the staff, they'd have to totally revamp the offense. And losing so much talent to graduation is going to kill their chances. While it has been disheartening to watch Auburn's season this year, I'm excited about their future. ;)

I don't know that he would stay around and coach. I bet Mack requests he comes on and gets to recruiting his type of players. What I would be curious about is would he want to carry any current assistants with him to his next school?
 
Interesting. I don't see Malzahn leaving b/c its a lateral move (even if a better school, its the same position). I think he'll be looking for a HC job somewhere. Same with Coach Mac for us. I could see them go heavy after Norm Chow.
 
I thought Mack and company wanted to focus on a more traditional type of downhill offense like ours after we spanked that bottom last year???

If Malzahn thinks the cheating scandal going on will bring his coaching career down or will bring USC type sanctions..You can betcha backside he'll be gone a day after they play for the NC..JMO

Absolutely. If Malzhan doesn't get a HC offer he might go to Texas. Next Auburn will be a 7-5 team. And that's before sanctions hit. That being said I still think Malzhan is taking a HC position.

I'm not sure Texas would offer Malzhan. They'd have to know he'd bolt sooner or later for a HC position.

not so sure it's a lateral move...at least it must not of been to the other coaches that went from the barn to the same position at Texas.

I think you are right on with this comment. As has been stated before, you have to strike while the iron is hot and being undefeated with your star quarterback most likely winning the Heisman trophy, you are hot and can command more money in a lateral move if you don't get a HC offer.
 
It might depend on how GM is wired. Does he really want to be a head coach? We assume he does, but we don't really know. Obvoiusly, he could probably land a HC gig right now if the right thing came available, but it might not be a high profile opportunity. Or (assuming AU wins it all, but he's afraid of NCAA problems) he could move (upgrade IMO) to UTA and try to win another one there. If he wants to be a HC, but doesn't want what's available now, he could go to UT and be successful and cement the opportunity to get a high profile hc gig in another 2-3 years.

I'll say this much, this year's Auburn team has proven that his system works with the right players in place.

I set you up for that one didn't I ATL. Good thing about UT is he could actually get those type of players by playing by the rules.

Last year he was 8-5. Maybe not ineffective, but certainly not championship caliber either. His system is like almost any one, you've got to insert the right players to have success. Just like CNS went from 7-6, to 12-2, to 14-0 in three years.

Their offense broke records in his first year as coordinator last year. It was the defense that caused most of their losses. You are right about one thing, though, any system will look better when you have better players. There are times when it is absolutely about the Jimmies and Joes and not the x's and o's.
 
In my OP, I noted that Ketchum said Mack was not worried about what it costs to get the guy he wants.

It's also worth noting that three of his most recent staff hires came from this state: Chizik, Muschamp and Applewhite.

If anyone wants to make head coaching kind of money without the head coaching kind of headaches, this is a really sweet deal if you've got the coaching chops.

Texas' problems this year weren't really coaching-related. They were talent and experience issues. You don't lose players like Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley and keep the same momentum. Those guys were not only NFL locks, but that kind of senior leadership can't just be replaced. Florida had a similar dropoff when its emotional leader left. Alabama's defense had the same drain. Glad to see Mack making changes, but I think Coach West would have been fine next year. All reports also note that he was one of the most successful and most loved coaches on the staff.
 
Auburn is losing Cam, the and "O" line. It would not be a lateral move. It would be a very smart move.
