Anyone remember how much a ticket, hot dog and coke was in 1978, 1988,
1998, and then 2008? I would like to know if it has gone up consistently.

I'm a grad student at UA, and I'm just getting drinks from now on. I do have the flexibility to pay with Bama Cash, but I wasn't gonna pay $8 for a sandwich and chips. Granted, I'm tailgating/crashing at a friend's place that always opens up his front lawn and his neighbor's front lawn for parking to anyone and everyone until it's full, so that makes a bit easy for me.

BTW, if anyone going to the game that wants park at my friend's house, send me a PM this week. His house is really close to 10th Ave., on the north side of the tracks, so in other words, really close to the stadium. It is first come first serve, so I'll try to find out when he'll be awake on Saturday to start parking cars.

I watch the food fights (along with the parking disputes) with a certain amount of detachment. I've searched my memory honestly and I cannot ever remember having eaten food in BD. That goes back to the fall of 1957. I also park downtown and hike in (I know some cannot), or, when I do stay in town, I take one of the shuttles. Nevertheless, I've come to accept that threads about food in the stadium will always run multiple pages. So, I'll just keep watching, but I feel that it would be amiss if I didn't remind folk that there are alternatives to eating stadium food...

Student admission was free. All you needed was your ACT card. So far as concessions, I'm just not sure. I don't remember any being available, maybe they were. We took in what we wanted, which wasn't much. The average male freshman's body weight was probably thirty pounds below what it is now. Much has changed about calorie intake and energy output.

Re: Stadium Food Prices

$6.00 Cokes -- The University White Collars have absolutely lost their minds...

And

What's with not having the JumboTron on the Quad this year...?!?

The University said that it was due to "financial constraints" -- this coming from an athletic program that had a +30 million NET profit last year,

Removing the JumoboTron from The Quad -- That's pretty cheap IMHO

** Instead of a JumboTron the University has gotten a little greedy -- they zoned a few more reserved tailgating locations there **

:mad2:
Well they did spend 2.1 million dollars on a building to get rid of two bars, not to mention raising tuition. I mean they have to exploit that money from someone!!!!

Kids used to actually pick on the fat kids back then. Now they'll get beat up by the other 10 in hearing distance.
Any kid depending on fat to help him beat somebody up is making a bad miscalculation.... :D

Wow! Having lived all over the world, I've never managed to get to a game at BD, but it sounds like it's getting as bad as Disneyland.

I think we're paying 6 bucks for churros now! :eek2:

It's worse than Disney or any other theme park for that matter.

I've never really eaten any food at BD, other than maybe a bag of peanuts (now $4 by the way) or something like that, but it is ridiculous to ask folks to pay $4 for 8 oz of Coke and 8 oz of ice in a paper cup. The $6 plastic cups are an absolute joke. There are plenty of eating choices before and after the game so I can avoid the food prices, but after a half of yelling and cheering I almost always need a drink at halftime. And I feel absolute pity for the folks with small children.

It ought to be against the law to charge folks this much for fountain drinks that might cost $0.50 total (and that's probably high). Then, you have bottled water for $4!? I think bottled water is ridiculous at $1 a bottle, much less $4. I am a big time capitalist and free market kind of guy, but this is highway robbery. The university ought to be ashamed for gouging their fans this way. Having said that, you can bet the prices are here to stay.

I don't mind paying the elevated prices for food(thus far). I do agree the drinks are absurd. I would love to see all the facts and figures to justify it. I always think of the Masters golf tourn. and how amazingly low their concessions are. Seems more a favor to the fans than a way to gouge those who can't go anywhere else to eat and drink.

I had the Dream Land pulled pork sandwich. What a disappointment. Very greasy, full of fat and just not very good. I won't make that mistake again.

I don't like the prices but it's what the market will bear. When people stop buying the stuff, the prices will most likely come down.

The prices will never come down, I think that is wishful thinking. People don't have to buy the food, but it is hard to totally avoid buying anything to drink, especially if you have kids at the game. It's price gouging, plain and simple. UA has a captive customer base and they are sticking it to them. They won't let you bring anything in, so you are forced to pay $4 for water or sit for 3 plus hours with nothing. Not so bad for a night game, but what about that 2:30 kickoff when its 90 degrees out?

Great point TideWatcher! I was going to elude to the cheap prices at the Masters event as well. I beleive it is exactly what several of you have said, as long as there are some that are willing to pay it, they'll continue to charge these amounts for it!

It is a bit absurd, but if you want to avoid it, fill up before the game and then hit a local fast food joint immediately afterwards.

There are simple solutions to everything! (I should run for president!!!)

If you're getting 8 oz of ice, someone isn't doing the job they're supposed to do. Ice is the most expensive part of the drink (and the most difficult to replenish if it runs out). At around $.12 per drink for the paper cups, the drinks are almost pure profit, so it doesn't matter if you get ice or no ice. Many people order the drinks with no ice and all workers are supposed to oblige.

The Masters is a unique event in all of big time sports in that the people running the tournament are not trying to make any money off of it. Augusta National has more money than they need and charging the ridiculously low food prices is their way of "giving back".

The truth on the food at BDS is that the aim is to maximize profit, not give value to the consumer. They've priced the food at their best estimate of that which will maximize their profit. Depending on how much they sold on game day, the prices could come down if they actually didn't sell enough of product but I highly doubt this will happen. That would 1) mean they didn't do a good job of estimating the elasticity of demand and/or 2) they would be acknowledging the food was overpriced (and we know this 'aint gonna happen). The bottom line is the prices are here to stay and will likely increase even further next year. The only way to stop it from happening is not to purchase anything. That's really hard to do considering for many people it's an integral part of the game day experience.
