After watching the replay of the call he made in the UF-Ark game, this was the first time I paid closer attention to details. I'm sure most if not all of you have already noticed this, but hey, I'm nearly sixty and it takes a while to sink in sometimes. All I had paid attention to before was the actions of the Ark player and he didn't do anything to warrant a penalty imo. Now I have noticed that the Florida player leaned in to block him before he leaned in to the Florida player. Looks to me like the Florida player initiated contact which was not anywhere close to illegal nor flagrant, imo. This guy, much like the umpire in the baseball playoff game the other night on the play at third base, wasn't doing the best job he could do because neither of them payed attention to the entire play. I feel sorry for the other members of this officiating crew who were definitely trying to call the game the best they could, because now they have to pay a penalty because of someone else's inferior performance. It's not come up in this thread, but Redding's predecessor, along with Kramer, changed the makeup of crews completely. Under the old system, we had elite crews, with the most experience, grading down to green crews. The "big" games got the elite crews, while the younger guys got experience on Vandy vs. Popcorn St. UA, being highly ranked, would get an elite crew for all but the OOC games. Under Kramer and his buddy, they "homogenized" the crews. The head guy will still be elite, but you're guaranteed that you're going to get a back judge or linesman, for example, who's only been training for a short period. And they're assigned randomly. I guess its a way to avoid thinking. I think it stinks...
I think this should almost become mandatory for personal foul/late hit type calls.
Considering the nature of the calls where it's usually the guy lured in to retaliation gets the call, a replay to let everyone know exactly what happened would be beneficial, IMO.
Do they even allow that in the NFL? There's a lot of reluctance to take calls out of the hands of the field officials...
Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner! In fact, I would propose some version of the following:
Instead of the replay official reviewing / over-ruling a call by another official, why not have an NFL-style replay booth and a headset on the sidelines. Let the official who made the call interact with the official in the replay booth to review that what he thought he saw actually happened.
For the sake of the flow of the game, you couldn't possibly review every penalty, but you might mandate reviews on penalties that negate scoring plays (like plays such as JPW's scramble vs LSU that was called back on a phatom holding call against A. Smith) or allow the coaches to have a "penalty challenge" flag they can throw once per half.
I agree with everyone that the PF on the Arkansas player was a horrible call. The only other thing he could have done, in hindsight, to avoid the penalty was to allow himself to get trucked. I thought football officials of all officials need to understand the necessity of allowing the players to protect themselves, which is all the Arky player did - if you saw the whole play.
The Georgia UC penalty was a bad call as well IMHO. However, when do the coaches/players bear responsibility in that situation for recognizing who the officials are and tailoring their conduct accordingly? Granted, this would not have helped in the Arky situation, and I don't mean to take all responsibility of of the officials.
My analogy would borrow from baseball. If you have a home plate umpire who you know consistently calls strikes two inches off the outside edge of the plate, do you moan and groan about it or do you adjust your approach and know that you have to swing at a pitch two inches off the plate with two strikes?
If you don't swing and get called out, I would say that's on you, not the umpire. Similarly, if A. J. Green, for example, would have just tossed the ball to the official and run over to the bench after scoring, he would not have given the official the opportunity to inject himself into the game.
IMHO, coaches and players need to be aware of this and adjust their conduct to prevent games being taken over by the officials.

If the SEC doesn't take a stand then this type of thing will continue to happen. As far as being on the take, supposedly the NFL hires guys who are making such big $$$ they wouldn't be on the take. I read this somewhere a few years ago and I need to find an article supports this.
Instant replay is a useful tool in the limited format we have now. Expanding its role to include reversing penalties which do not have a clear definition, which is easy to apply to the video evidence, would be a disaster IMO.
In short, instant replay has been good, but it is no substitute for quality officiating on the field.
I think that if you're gonna be an elite conference you had better have ELITE officials on the field in a big game. That would solve alot of the problem. I agree that you really can't take referee-ing the game from the field refs but if the field refs constantly make bad/eroneous/ bad game changing calls then they have no business on the field in any conference.
I'd be interested to know the crew personel make up of this blown non-call. wonder if it's the same crew or has crew members in commomn?
As for officials being fired for bad calls, dream on. Correct me, if I am wrong, but I do not recall the SEC ever firing an official over bad calls.
I deplored the ref'ing this crew did and was alarmed when the rumor surfaced that we might get 'em this weekend. I agree with the suspensions. That being said, I give Curles credit for taking responsibility and saying "I screwed up!".

He readily admitted that he only saw the play out of the corner of his eye. So therefore, he consciously pulled the flag and threw it based on what he thought could have happened. :rolleye2:
Then, the SEC, only after tremendous negative feedback from outraged fans throughout the entire SEC, publicly recognized that it was a bogus call. But evidently the fans continued to demand something be done, so they suspended the guilty crew.

Exactly. People will forgive a ref for missing a call, we can't see everything. But calling one that you missed is unforgivable.

Also, this ding ding ding we have a winner stuff is not exactly true when I believe most of the members here do not want any more delays in this game.
I believe you would take the human element out of the game in turn, ruin collegiate football.
However, I agree that a suspension is warranted. But, please don`t lengthen the games.
That's not a very PC way to do it, so you have to sacrifice a better system for
better feelings.

Especially with the fact that there are NEWBIES in every crew and after watching that sickening video from 2004 vs LSU again. Let something like this happen to our beloved CRIMSON TIDE and I bet some minds would be changing quickly. I'll be here to say "I TOLD YOU SO"!! Besides I don't care how long the games last or how many commercials I have to watch to see the TIDE win!! :smile:
