Swine Flu in Madison County

Local news stations in Huntsville are reporting that schools in Madison County, Madison City, and Huntsville City will be closed until Monday due to two possible cases of the swine flu at Heritage Elementary in Madison. :eek2:

Alabama high school sports programs suspended

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama High School Athletic Association says it’s shutting down its athletic events because of reports of possible swine flu in the Huntsville area.

Concerns over the illness have led to the shutdown of some schools around Huntsville.

Steve Savarese, the association’s executive director, says he hopes activities can be resumed by Tuesday.

The state track and field championships scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Gulf Shores and Troy will be rescheduled. Savarese says all other postseason activities scheduled through Monday are also being postponed, including baseball, soccer, softball and golf.

I think there is a lot of overreaction out there. Not saying that there isn't a threat, but people just need to use common sense!

I think you're right Ldlane. The media (as usual) is not revealing the entire story either or they're not spending much time doing it and are spending more time trying their dangdest to create a panic. A buddy of mine is a PA and is also in the Guard. They were notified yesterday and briefed about the swine flu cases. It is not as if everyone that gets it dies. Yes it is a stronger version of the flu but it is not something that if you get it you automatically call the preacher and family in. They were also told that over 80% of the people getting it are Mexicans and the 23 month old that died in Brownsville, TX didn't actually die FROM the swine flu. The child already was sick and had medical problems. The swine flu was just the "straw that broke the camel's back" so to speak. He also said that the media isn't telling people that there have been cases of people getting the swine flu and recovering just like the normal flu.

The ones dying have shown to either be already sick or having bad medical problems to begin with. Not to take this lightly but it is far from panic stage.
 
There's a girl in Sugar Land area that's already had it and is recovered. She had your standard flu treatment - no hospital

I fortunately haven't gotten anything, I've just been tired from my research paper writing this week for graduate school. I am flying home next week to California, and knowing how airplanes are virtual petri-dishes for bacteria, I'm kind of concerned as to how to stay flu-free. I've been doing the usual washing hands with soap, etc.
 
I agree that there's a huge alarm that's going on that's really not necessary in an industrialized country like ours.

Best defense: Wash your hands and don't touch your face.

If that doesn't work and you get it anyway, Tamiflu & Rilenza will help lessen the severity and duration of the symptoms.

It's the little kids and elderly that most often succumb to the flu every year, not your otherwise healthy individuals.

You would think it was the end of days the way some folks are acting.

My daughter's last day of college was today. Had to present her chem-E case study while dragging around from the effects of influenza-B (the campus has had a huge amt of cases). Though, I think her prof went a little easy on her.

Probably the suckiest last day of college any kid should ever have.
