Tejas Fans Still Bitter?

I find great humor in their delusion because if you take the entire game into account it was the sloppiest and most mistake prone game Alabama played all season :D
Obviously I don't watch many of your games, but I really thought that Saban did some strange things in the first half of that game. He took some risks that he generally doesn't take, and none of them seemed to work out. Every single one seemed to backfire, and then your offense went vanilla in the second half with the big lead. That probably gave their fans a false sense of security around the whole "what might have been" discussion if Colt had stayed in that game and the score not gotten out of hand at half-time.

My opinion - the Alabama defense was going to find a way to win that game, and Texas had no answer for your offense until you stopped even pretending that you planned to throw the ball in the 3rd quarter. But both of the teams in that BCSCG would have been slaughtered by your team last year.

I don't know if I'd say it was the sloppiest. I think that would be reserved either for the UTe or the AU game.
I can see how it could appear to be so because of how the games played out late and the narrower margins , but there was only one Alabama penalty and turnover against Tennessee . The passing game (5 sks out of 11 att) and secondary were much worse against Texas . I give the barn credit for switching to a 46 defense for that game and shutting Ingram down :(

I've lived in Dallas for 17 years, so I find myself in this situation often. The first couple of times, right after the game itself, I thought their fans were just in a state of denial, and that was understandable, so I tended toward, "Well, that was unfortunate, and we'll never know. By the way, McElroy played the whole game with cracked ribs" etc. Now, years later, as it still comes up with the predictability and velocity of a U.N. condemnation of Israel after a Hezbollah rocket attack, I realize it's a state of delusion. No amount of logic will have any effect, so at that point I began silently to invoke the old prohibition against wrestling with a pig.

In the Tennessee game we had one ten-yard penalty (presumably holding) and Ingram fumbled, which was admittedly
a shock. We were playing a RIVALRY game against a team that had a week's rest while we had played eight straight
weeks INCLUDING a slugfest the previous Saturday night against South Carolina (where Ingram carried the team on
his back on that last drive). If the referees do their job in the second quarter (the non-pass interference covering
Julio), we put that game away early.

Against Auburn, we had zero turnovers, four penalties for 26 yards, and only 73 yards rushing (falling behing 14-0
in the first five minutes.....plus Auburn being more concerned with preventing Ingram from winning the Heisman
than actually winning the game does that).

Otoh - McElroy passed for 218 and what an excellent final drive.

We played sloppy against Texas (a month off does that) and still scored 37 points. And you can basically
give the defense 14 of those (Dareus' pick and the Anders fumble recovery inside the ten for the kill
shot).

So even with poor offense, the O still got us 23 points.

I don't know if you've been around enough to read it, but McElroy was playing with cracked ribs suffered against UF. There was no way he was going to be throwing much. I've had broken ribs, suffered in a kayaking accident, and I couldn't imagine trying to throw anything. In fact, I had to rent a mechanized hospital bed for four weeks, to help me get out of bed. Friends of mine who watched some of the practices commented that something was wrong with Mac - no downfield throws.

Now, we finally find out how badly AJ was injured while playing in the CG - dislocated shoulder, torn labrum and sprained AC joint. Again - no downfield threat. Maybe we'll finally get to play a CG this year with a healthy QB. BTW, having AJ continue to play was not without some long-term risk for AJ's shoulder. The normal drill for youngsters with that injury is immediate surgery. With us old folk, you just reduce the subluxation and that's the end of it. However, with young people, the capsule, tendons and muscles around the shoulder are flexible and they stretch. If stress is placed on the shoulder - like continuing to throw - there's a very real risk of developing the classic "loose" shoulder which dislocates easily and repeatedly, with a reduced % of a successful outcome. I'm sure that the risks and rewards were discussed thoroughly with AJ and his parents. As someone elsewhere posted, AJ was further ahead of Sims than we understood.

Years ago, I had the chance to kayak the Grand Canyon. About two days in, we ran across a rafting party, all youngsters who had won a lottery slot after years of trying. One young man had dislocated his shoulder a few days before and had immobilized it. He was going to rest it for a couple of days before starting back rowing. One of my friend's wife was an MD and she explained that, if he did that, he risked chronic problems for life, and that he'd better remain a passenger. He was one sad-looking guy...

I was flagged down in Columbia, SC, while checking in at HGI by a young man from TX. His exact words were, " You know if Colt...". I laughed and replied he'd be a quadriplegic had he tried to last 10 minutes.... And he should count his beat-down star that our QB played with a bruised/broken/fractured rib. Otherwise... And note our QBs Dad didn't whine and pull him out of the game. I congratulated them on getting to Pasadena, but honestly 4 teams in the SEC could have dismantled Colt just as badly. Then I noticed a convoy of TX utility trucks in the parking lot and wished them a good trip.

I think what hurts a lot of Texas fans is what might have been. Times have been tough since that game. All they can claim recently is that they helped RGIII win a Heisman.

Karma. Yes, what might have been: Alabama v. Texas Orange Bowl, Jan 1, 1965. Joe Namath DID cross the goal line!

You are most likely referring to the fake punt on the first possession. It was only last year that I finally found out what happened on that play. We had identified a weakness we could exploit in the Texas formation. The fake was in the game plan and when the punter identifies that coverage in a certain area of the field the fake was automatically to be run. So PJ sees the coverage, audibles into the play, the ball is snapped and he throws to where Julio is supposed to be to make the catch. Except Julio was shaken up on the previous play and on the sidelines. Instead Dre was running down the field completely unaware he was to receive the pass until he saw the ball in the air. I hope I got the names right cause I don't have the memory to remember the details of every play years ago like some of you do. That's basically what happened and why it looked so poorly done.

Y'all answer me this - could Colt have come back in that game and been effective?

Colt has not been effective since. Neither has Texas. Gave Florida a whooping they never recovered from and I suspect LSU may never recover from the championship game whoopin last year. I hope anyway.

I think you nailed it...

All that coupled with the ball being badly under thrown. Had it been executed properly it would have worked.

This may be true. But i actually had a conversation with Dre about this play at my place in Tuscaloosa while playing NBA 2K11 :cool2:. (hes a pretty humble, good guy, he came over and chilled with us a few times with some other bama players) but anyways... he acted like he knew about it at least, because he was ....ed off that P.J. didn't throw it far enough for him to catch it. I think his quote was along the lines of "man i was ....ed about that, if he woulda just got the ball to me i was gone." I guess he could have not known about it and just still been angry in retrospect.

although IMO freshman Dre, if he would have scored, for sure would have gotten a celebration penalty. BUT it would have been well worth it. :p

Hard to tell. He certainly didn't look prepared, but he could certainly be telling the truth...

IIRC, the fake punt was called because Gideon looked to be coming for the block. He faked, which meant he was covering/blocking Dre. The short throw allowed Gideon to make the INT.

Well, as far as not letting go is concerned, I sympathize. After all, when Cam Newton led a comeback on us in the Iron Bowl, I couldn't bring myself to post again on Tidefans until, well, today. It's not logical, but it's true.

Losses hurt. They're supposed to. Otherwise, you just don't care enough.

BTW, the last Championship did a lot to help bring me back to life. A couple more, and I'll be good as new. :)

Just because they think highly of their academic standards does not mean they aren't as dumb as a box of rocks. Which is exactly how they view all Aggies.
