Terry Grant Update

Chuck, I'm just speculating when I say this but the thought has crossed my mind several times over the last few months.

Notice we aren't recruiting what I would call a true fullback. It makes me wonder if there is the possiblity Shula may be thinking about moving to a split-back offense...especially when you start looking at our depth at RB.

Interesting thought.

We sure will have the depth to do something like that.

Blocking

The best blockers will be essential if we do go to a split back. Whoever can pick up the blitzes will be in there. Regardless, I like it.

Roll Tide!!

Wasn't Terry Grant supposed to have announced his decision today at 10AM?

I think his coach stated recently in the Clarion Ledger that it would be NSD, and even then it would be a tough decision.

it has mine as well, Terry.....I remember someone saying (maybe you, Rich, or Earle?) that the staff was using/thinking of using some split back with JPW in at QB.

It makes sense to me. It could open up a lot of mismatches and holes in defenses. Especially with a good H-back or TE run blocking.

seriously, let's fastforward to 2007 after this class has taken a redshirt, if necessary....

Jimmy Johns, Jr.
Roy Upchurch, Soph
Glen Coffee, Jr.
Ali Sharrief, Soph
Mike Ford, Fr or Soph
Terry Grant, Fr or Soph (if he commits)
Max Martin, Jr.

I've heard that speed kills. Do you figure that's true? ;)

Terry, another thing that I don't think is speculation is the fact that Shula seems to going after a few Prothro-like players (Arenas more similar than Grant but still some speed similarities) in order to protect us from the possibility of what happened last year after TP's injury. Problem in 05 is that we only had one "TP" (i.e. players that fit his mold). :)

:mad2: there are 4 threads with 10-20 posts each on warchant taht Alabama is paying players, thats why they are losing recruits to us. It ****ed me off so much I had yo pay for membership just to respond. I pointed out CMS nfl ties and his ties in FL being OC at TB and Miami as attractive to kids, plus he is young, runs a clean ship and represents a traditional powerhouse University. It all fell on deaf ears, they went as far as incorporating spurriers recent comments. :mad2: :mad2:

Hey,this kid looks like a faster KD

However, the latest sems to indicate he's changed his mind "again",and may wait to after NSD! IMO grteat prospect, but seems alittle flaky! Hey,don't get me wrong, would love to get him,but does appear wishy washy!

I wouldn't call him wishy washy.....the kid is legitimately torn right now. And not like Tebow or Mustain. ;)

Not to hijack this thread, but as far as I can tell Bama nor the Barn offered any of the 4 players that spurrier got from the state of Alabama. spurrier is just letting his mouth overload his a.. again. He needs to be worried about Clemson.

Terry Grant

Can't remember the source that the report came from (surfing several different sites over the past couple of days will do it to you), but one of the "reported" reasons that Grant is leaning towards Bama is the fact that he does not have immediate family in the Lumberton area... from my understanding, he lives with a guardian of some sort (i.e. aunt, uncle, etc.). According to some, he seems to be a very strong Bama lean (before he took off for Memphis this weekend).

I've been trying to convey my cautious optimism on Grant, but we really have a great shot. If he decides to stray from USM territory, he's ours and we'll gladly take him.

How many more people can we sign (commit) with this class? I guess we are expecting some not to qualify, but I was under the impression that we only had three or four more spots left, and I am sure no matter what we are leaving some for Smith, Hawthorne and Whitehead and now Terry Grant. I believe we have a few more people we are looking at too. Can a class over-sign or isn't there a limit like 25 or 27 or something along those lines?

we can sign as many as you want, but you can only bring in 25 a year if you don't go over the 85 total on your roster. We can greyshirt or have non qualifiers out of any number that go over 25. We are at 24 currently and I'm guessing 3 more slots at the max. Smith, Grant, and one out of Hawthorne, Peanut, or Talbert.

Speed kills

IMagine returning to the wishbone and a Db looking over the line when the huddle breaks to see this:

DJ and KB out wide
Tyrone Under center (just to throw them off)
and
Ford
Upchurch &
Grant in the backfield!

Talk about picking your poisin people!

I read on Rivals that Ford has run a 4.37 in the forty could that possibly be accurate? Also, I have heard that Grant is the fastest player from Mississippi this year. I hope we can put this speed to good use!
