what is the Dr Seuss one? I haven't paid attention. is it that Seuss was a horrible scum to his first wife?
During WWII he had some very racist cartoons about the Japanese. Honestly these man babies are melting big time for a bad actress getting fired for comparing being a “conservative” to being a Jew in the 30’s and 40’s in Germany.

My main problem with all this cancel culture is that it takes things out of context a lot. Some of this stuff is a product of the time at which it was created. With Dr. Seuss, if it is just the imagery, why not change it and reprint the books (unless the estate refuses to allow this)? His none Seuss artwork, IMO, should have no barring on the rest of the Seuss books. I've seen some calling for all Seuss books to be removed but, I just think that is going to far.

IDK, I'm not sure how to really express my viewpoint. If something was created as pure hatred, racist propaganda then it should be banished. But things that just have some imagery or language or themes that are a product of there time should be viewed in that context, not banned. Slap a warning on everything, I'm fine with that, Disney has done that with some of their movies. I think that should also be an acceptable solution.
This is what everyone is in an uproar about

But the real cancel culture isn’t on the left it’s actually on the right. Who tried to get PBS to stop showing Arthur because they were showing a gay wedding, who boycotted Star Wars because it was “too feminist”, who is constantly accusing Starbucks of nonsense during Christmas season, who is constantly trying to boycott the NFL and Nike, who is constantly proud of all these things?

Basically some people said a few books were racist. They’re lesser known Dr. Seuss books. Then the Dr. Seuss folks used the opportunity to axe them because no one was reading them any way (Well except the Mulberry St. one). So they got some pub, both good and bad, and won’t be publishing some terrible children’s book no one was buying. It was a win-win for them.

I’m not sure what “real cancel” culture is, but I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s primarily a tool of the right.

There is plenty of it to go around. I’m not usually a fan of Bill Maher, but he had a pretty good take on it on his Feb 26 2021 show.

I won’t embed here because he loves to drop some F-bombs but if you want to find it search for:

bill maher cancel culture is over party youtube

That should bring it up. He makes some solid points.

There really isn’t a cancel culture to be honest. But the right is far more about trying to get things pulled and whining about everything that offends them than the left. Yes there are some dumb dumb things that some on the left whine about but on YouTube there are far and away more Karens on the right trying to get Disney+, WB, the NFL, and Twitter to fall on hard times because they were offended than the leftist that cries nazi every time something is close to the line.

I don't think that anyone is saying that the books are racist - at least, I have not read that. The problem as I understand it is that the images used in those books are considered offensive by today's measure.

Right, we agree. I also think Dr. Seuss’ trust managers saw an opportunity to do two things- 1) Discontinue some books that don’t sell and aren’t popular. 2) Get some good publicity, by acknowledging the offensive content and getting rid of it. I can hear the conversation among them-

“Which books are under fire? Oh those yeah take them out of print. Im just glad it’s not Green, Eggs, and Ham for a Pete’s sake” 😀.

Just feels silly to me. He made editorial cartoons and army propaganda at a time we were at war. I mean, the context here matters doesn't it?

I also see that Universal Orlando is evaluating their Seuss Landing now, which was named after the "If I ran a zoo" book.....a book I honestly have no familiarity with.

Is this mainly just getting rid of the war time cartoons and propaganda...and books that most people don't really know? Or does it bleed over into his more well known books?

Asking out of ignorance, whole thing just seems silly to me.

As someone who is not a Seuss "scholar".....I can officially say, I've never even heard of those 6 books. Still don't see how removing them does any good though...use them as examples and a small means of teaching what not to do or to show how times were different. Reclassify them maybe? Put some sort of label on them? Or maybe its all a ploy to increase sales, I'm sure the sales of these particular has gone up since Tuesday.

Today, on Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, Dr. Seuss Enterprises celebrates reading and also our mission of supporting all children and families with messages of hope, inspiration, inclusion, and friendship.

We are committed to action. To that end, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, working with a panel of experts, including educators, reviewed our catalog of titles and made the decision last year to cease publication and licensing of the following titles: And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, If I Ran the Zoo, McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super!, and The Cat’s Quizzer. These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.

Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises’s catalog represents and supports all communities and families.

You obviously need to step back and educate yourself on a more profound and productive level than ever before

Biggest difference - children read these books. IMO it is a great thing to want to remove this type of imagery from children's books.

I guess I'm struggling to understand why anyone is upset over this. No one is cancelling Dr Seuss, simply removing the books with clear racist imagery.

From the little I've read he didn't want to be a racist but had clear blind spots. I would bet if Dr Seuss were born 30 years ago he would be all on board for removing those books.

I agree. In the 60's I wouldn't have found the cartoons offensive.

Times, mores, ideas, opinions, and what is politically correct all change. While some laws can be carved in stone, others must be maleable.
