Good: This was the best effort I’ve seen from us in a long time, going back into the middle of Saban’s tenure. Could have used more punting reps, but overall even the officiating was solid (aside from the one issue noted under Bad). Maybe they were a little overzealous, but I won’t fault them for it. I also respected how hard ULM played all the way through. For who they are, they’re a solid team.

Bad: The targeting call was flat-out wrong.

Ugly: Nothing in this game, except the lingering frustration from the FSU loss. From here on out, I’m judging Bama more on effort than on wins. DeBoer is right: this is a good team, but the effort has to be there. His challenge is finding a way to keep these players motivated. If we consistently bring that kind of effort, we might still lose a few, but I believe good things will follow.
Bama did not have one punt under 50 yards.

Good: Outstanding QB play by everyone who took a snap at that position for the entire game. That 20-straight completion streak was historic. That will be a popular subject of trivia questions for decades to come.

Bad: That was a ticky-tack targeting call on Dre Jr. That call should only be made if the contact was unavoidable.

Ugly: Kayden Proctor has been a liability since his first snap. He is too big, too slow and his footwork is insufficient to keep the QB upright against future SEC and better caliber pass rushers. Why he keeps being talked about as a potential 1st rounder is astonishing.

The Good - Excellent effort and finish by the entire team. Ty looked super. We got to see new faces, and they didn't disappoint. Even the true freshmen contributed bigly. Bama did not have to punt. No injuries to speak of.

The Bad - it's hard to find anything bad. Bama was 5 for 55 yards on penalties. Much improved, but still too much.

The Ugly - The targeting. The refs made a couple of ugly calls.
Bama still had more penalties than the opponent.

Good: the intensity, effort, and execution. I don’t recall seeing it like that for 60 minutes in a game like this. Ever. Even during the Nick Saban era, there was always a stark drop off in all three in the second half of these cupcake games. Granted, much of that is because Saban himself put the whole team on breaks after they’d get up by about 35-42 points. It was great to see the second and third string on both sides of the ball actually get to play.

Bad: Was there anything “bad”? The lack of a pass rush is concerning but we are so banged up on the DL. They just missed about 3 or 4 sacks. Also, the lack of anything explosive in the running game until the last TD against Monroe’s scrubs was concerning. These things will be the difference in winning and losing during the rest of the schedule.

Ugly: the targeting may have been technically correct but the rule is stupid. Both TD plays that were called back were for bogus calls in which the La Monroe defender fell down.
