Game Thread: The other games today thread (11/29/24)

Sark just shooed his guys off of the A&M logo. Some of them were kicking on it and stuff like that. Good move by him.
Glad to see it. That business needs to stop. The losers can’t handle it. Not sure I blame them honestly. But what happened at Ohio State today could have been (and will be in the future if it’s not stopped) a LOT worse.

BYU will win their game vs Houston. It was actually a decent game up until now. With about 5 minutes to go, BYU was up 24-18, but Houston was driving and had the ball about BYU's 45 or so. Houston went for it on 4th down, but their QB ran way back trying to get away, then fumbled, then the ball was kicked around until it was finally recovered inside the 20 yard line. BYU scored to make it 30-14. Houston got the ball, and fumbled again. BYU now running out the clock.

Or, conversely, we teach players to execute so they don't have to be butthurt over their rival claiming their stadium.

Be like Bama.

To think initially I was on Ohio St’s side of the argument, but the Michigan player had a point “You all had 60 minutes to fight with us, but you wanna wait until we kick y’all’s butt to start fighting is just a lack of class”.

I don’t like the flag planting or field rushing traditions but the easiest ways to prevent them is to win.

When LSU beat you in Tuscaloosa in 2019, if they had tried to plant their flag at midfield there would have been a melee, and you guys would have been all about it. You will never convince me otherwise

Same thing happened at the end of NC State and UNC.

I guess I’m showing my age here. Regardless of your disdain for your opponent, win or lose, by a huge margin or a last second score, you show respect. You show sportsmanship. It isn’t necessarily “respect” for your competitor. It respect for THE GAME.

I never want to see an Alabama player “flag plant” at Jordan Hare, or Neyland, or Sanford Stadium. Why? Because I want our players to walk into places EXPECTING to win. No outward expression of emotion needed. Business as usual.

Coach Ogre came about as close as you could after the game by gathering all his players at midfield afterwards and proclaiming this is “our house now”. He was lucky most of the Bama players had moved on to the locker room.

They did a lot that day…. They refused to enter the stadium when they were supposed to, they paraded around the field, and they did a lot of post game shenanigans. I mean if Auburn had beaten us yesterday then I guarantee you that they would’ve stayed and played Rammer Jammer like they did in 2010. To the victors go the spoils, you don’t like it then don’t lose to them.

I think much of it though is basically a bunch of stupid B1G culture. I mean seriously, MSU has done it for decades and there has been a long tradition around Michigan-Ohio St pregame “hold me back” nonsense traditions. I mean hell, Wisconsin-Minnesota had a long tradition of “cutting down the goal posts” until one time in 80 years someone got their feelings hurt. The B1G has historically encouraged this arrogant Yankee frat boy behavior and it’s more shocking that incidents like yesterday don’t happen more often. Outside of Florida and FSU i honestly can’t think of much flag planting going on elsewhere on a consistent basis.

This happens throughout the game, and has for decades. College football abandoned decorum during the Miami Hurricane dynasty and has never looked back.

My point is that it predates the Miami dynasty especially when it involves B1G traditions. I’m probably a minority on this board who will willingly admit that Ohio St vs Michigan is the greatest rivalry in sports and probably the rivalry with the most hatred amongst both teams, and a lot of that is because the fans and the teams build up a lot of traditions to express their hatred. Like “Xing out the M” or “busting buckeyes” to pregame “hold me back sessions” that happen every year. It leads to real fights on a consistent basis. What we saw in this year’s IB is far more rare by comparison.

But there are several historical B1G traditions that have led to brawls in the recent years. Like I said the Wisconsin-Minnesota game used to have the goal post chop without issue. But now they don’t even award the axe on the field if the visitor wins because of a recent brawl.

So you are blaming today's problems on the B1G. 🤪

Compared to the SEC… yall have far more “in your face” traditions that are meant to belittle your opponent even on their home field. Aside from Florida-Florida St “spearing” midfield, there are very few traditions in the SEC that spark the level of response that the B1G does on consistent basis.

MSU- planting flags far before Baker was a thought

Wisconsin-Minnesota- chopping down goal posts

Ohio St- Michigan- too many traditions pre and post game to count.

The flag planting is just another symptom of the self indulgent generation of players we have...the sword slash, the finger wagging, the celebration after every play....its all about calling attention to them not the team..they need to get off my lawn!!! lol

Not just players. Happening everywhere right now. But, yeah, B1G.
