"3-0 but we focus on the process"

That was a sign I saw on Gameday Saturday morning. I think it's probably even more applicable now then it was before the game (except for the fact that we're 3-1 now). Before the season I predicted we would lose to UGA and LSU, and tonight I saw nothing to make me change my mind. Does the loss sting? Absolutely. But I don't think anyone was expecting this year's team to win championships. I think some people may have let the first three games fool them into thinking we were back among the elite, but we aren't there yet. We're making progress, but "the focus is on the process."

I thought the game was a contrast in maturity. I don't mean maturity of players or coaches or schemes. I mean maturity of programs. Richt's system has been in place at UGA for years now and it shows. Every player was recruited to fit into the scheme, and they all know their place in it. Their team may be young but the plan is not. Alabama, on the other hand, has just begun building a program. There is a clear direction as to where we are going, but we aren't there yet. Tonight was another step down the road to the goal.

Tonight was not a perfect game. It was not even close. The defense played well considering how long they were on the field, but the pass rush was poor and run defense was inconsistent. The offense did not have a good game. Wilson looked lost at times against the zone and missed several sure touchdown passes that would have won the game for us (this has been a recurring theme for a while now). Playcalling was questionable at times -- what happened to the run? Our running game may have been inconsistent but I did not see any attempt to wear the Dawgs down. We seem to have two modes: the "normal" mode, in which we attempt to hit big plays at the expense of sustaining drives, and the "hurry up" mode, in which we suddenly are able to drive down the field as if it were nothing.

However, despite all of these problems, when time expired the score was tied. We may have been down by 10 on two separate occasions but we didn't stop fighting. We kept playing our game and we were able to fight our way back. I've seen some people on the board say we were lucky not to be blown out, but I don't think that is the case at all. We weren't blown out because we never gave up and never panicked. That in itself is a welcome change from last year.

So am I disappointed with the loss? Absolutely. Very much so. But I know that we are still moving in the right direction and I couldn't be more optimistic about the future. I have all faith that both coaches and players will learn lessons from this game and will continue to improve week by week.

Good game, Dawgs, but watch out next year in Athens.

Roll Tide!

Very good post, Navy Tider. Nobody wants to lose, especially Alabama fans, but the better team won last night. The point you made about the maturity of the Georgia program compared to ours was extremely sobering in light of how much of the process is still unfinished. We look at our team and say we just don't have the talent and depth to play with UGA, FSU, UT and LSU, but most of the players we have do not fit CNS system. This is CMR's 7th season at UGA and he has recruited players specifically to fit what he wants to do, CNS has to take what he inherited and make them fit. To the players credit; they have bought into CNS system and their effort cannot be blamed. Where do we go from here? Look no farther than CPB first season 5-4-1 and CGS first season 7-5. We will lose to teams that have superior talent whose programs are mature, but they will know they have been in a game. How we respond to adversity is the biggest part of "the process".

I agree. Also good post to NavyTider. I don't think this game was ever close to a blow-out either, at least it never felt that way to me even watching the 'dawgs early success. I remember telling my fiance after the half when Lowe muffed the punt return, that Bama would get it together and come back, I just felt they would. They'd played the worst half you could play & was still down only by a touchdown at that point.

I agree with your comments, folks. If this was the 4th year for this coaching staff I would be worried, but it is only the beginning. A Couple of good recruiting classes and we won't lose these kind of games.

Hang in there Tidefans, the ride has just begun!

This loss isn't the worst thing to ever happen to us. 10 wins is still realistic. But if we don't get them this year, I won't lose any sleep.

First off I agree with everything you said. Great post. Secondly I to have wondered why after these three wins I started seeing "Bama's back" coming from the people that should know the most about this Alabama football team.

Nothing in these three games has screamed "Bama's back". We've shown signs of very bright spots in what has been inconsistent performances. Look no further than CNS's interviews preseason and during this season. He has said it a million times we're inconsistent in many areas (intensity, focus, execution etc.) Last night's game was another example. However the inconsistencies cost us last night.

We'll know "Bama's back" when we put the nail in the coffin of a 21-0 lead and driving to score another rather than turning the ball over. We'll know "Bama's back" when we can stay focused for an entire game and not have numerous lapses keeping the game's closer than they should be. Right now we're learning how to be a champion. We'll get there but in due time. We're just not there yet.

Great thoughts from everyone. It's obvious that we're just beginning the "journey" that CNS has in mind. This team will improve between now and November, and the program will get better and better in years to come as CNS re-stocks the stable with some blue-chips horses. I can't wait to watch it all play out!
