The running game... or lack thereof

I saw a stat that said Saban was 30-20 in one score games at Alabama. I honestly find that hard to believe (his winning percentages in most stats are usually so good), but it demonstrates that Saban didn't let many teams get close (and almost all his losses were by a single score).
Saban was 33-21 in one score games, all six losses in 2007 were one score games

This film breakdown may just answer the question. Now the question is how do we fix it before December?

Saban spoke on this yesterday I think. He thinks that Alabama needs to switch up their playcalling to give their running game a chance. Run the ball on 2nd down, mix it up. Don't be so predictable.

People that think Bama is “going to find a running game” don’t understand football. It’s not scheme. It’s not play calling. It’s not coaching. Bama simply doesn’t have the personnel to run successfully in this conference. All players that could contribute to a run game are very meh

Don't know why they don't run Ty a little, he was top ranked dual QB coming out of high school. Don't need to run him as much as Milroe, but to keep defense honest I think would help the whole offense. If I remember when they were in Washington Penix ran the ball on read options to help their running game.

Because the dropoff behind him is precipitous.

I do think two to three a game might be good.

He did do it once today and got good yardage.

What i dont understand is why not keep a RB in on either side of TY for max protect and have TE eligible in the 2nd level?

Also, I think when we went I formation it really threw them off. We could have ran more PA out of that formation.

Hill needs a lot more carries. At minimum he falls for four yards. It just looked like the more he ran the more comfortable he got.
A little Henry-esque there. Not saying he is at that level but I was much more confident when he was in the game. Can catch too. Jam I knew was going to get stonewalled at first contact most every time.

I think Hill needs to play more as well. But he still got stuffed a good bit. 15 carries for 60 yards... But one run was for 28. 14 carries for 32 yards still indicates the lack of effective blocking.

The running wasn't great but your post is a little simplistic.

I think some of his carries were for short yardage situations including two one-yard carries for touchdowns which makes those very short, yet very successful, runs. Almost all decent rushing numbers will consist of longer runs and shorter runs including getting stuffed.

So taking out the two TD runs makes it 12 carries for 30 yards.

Not knocking Hill here or trying to overlook his efforts as I think he needs to continue to be RB1, but just pointing out our OL still has a long way to go. We need to find a way to get him a hole more often so that he can get to the second level, where he'd straight up murder some LBs and DBs. Just a few extra bursts a game would totally change the tone. I'm not sure we can do that with the the OL though sadly.

It would be interesting to go back and look at each of his carries, don't have the time today though.

You are right with the numbers but IMO, they are a bit misleading. Remember that some of his runs were for TDs when they were 2yds are closer and some were successful runs on 3rd and short where the D is focused on the run and a 1 or 2 yard run is a highly successful play, though it hurts the avg. I just checked the play-by-play and there were ?8? such runs (for TD or 2nd or 3rd and short). It seemed like he had about 4ypc on his non-short yardage plays, discounting the 28 yard gain.

He also caught 5 balls for 37 yds with a long of 16.

Grubb said today that the OL was good vs OU. There were a few holes that the RBs missed tho he did not name them. Two of the four sacks were on RBs, one each.

As I’ve noted several times, the OL is at least decent-adequate in pass pro probably above average, though almost no fan base is pleased with its OL. They were in the penultimate (next to last) cut for the Joe Moore award, an award researched (lot of film and stat evaluation) more than any other postseason award according to Stein.

Even tho run blocking is not good, it’s not nearly as bad as many think because none of the RBs are exceptional and miss many holes or are unable to take full advantage. The RBs try hard but… I hate even say anything because they are putting forth the effort. What more can they do? Miller’s promising year (he worked so hard to get ready) has been greatly hindered by two tough injuries for a RB. Somewhat like Ryan.

Reality - there is no fixing this with this personnel.
