re: The time has come!-pick the score-bama-texas! And give reasons!-NO smack with rivals

A pretty well written prediction from a PSU fan:

link...
I liked OregonTideFan's reply when the UT fans scoffed at Bama's being a "balanced team."

Bama Rushing 2806 yards, Passing 2573. Total Yards 5379
Texas Rushing 1985 yards, Passing 3636. Total yards 5721

So which is the Balanced team?
Of course, we're even more balanced, since the blowouts saw us running the entire 4th quarter to avoid running up the score. The UT boards read the same way all the other opponents' did - "Stop Ingram and make McElroy beat us." Of course, they don't believe he can...

re: The time has come!-pick the score-bama-texas! And give reasons!-NO smack with rivals

I would absolutely love some the big scores predicted in the thread, but I am going with a closer prediction. The reason, I think Colt will burn us on a couple of long strikes and I think we will be a bit sluggish after all the time off and out of rhythm which will play into their hands. I think we left a lot on the field against Florida and it will be tough to recharge mentally for this game to the point that we came into that one.

I don't have a clue. I have a lot of confidence in our team's ability, focus and game planning.

I just do not think what Texas will bring to the table is knowable for us. They are very talented, they do what it takes and know how to win games. I do not see them panicing or losing confidence if they get down.

Today I do not see the low scoring defensive game here, but I keep going back and forth on that.

Just for fun I am going to pretend that I have a gun to my head and say 27 to 21 good guys. :BigA:

Alabama 20 Texas 17

-Both teams have solid defenses and special teams play, and with over a month to prepare, that will keep the game close. Alabama makes one more play, likely in special teams, to seal the victory.

I would think the long lay-off would affect a passing teams timing much more than a running team. :)
I didn't mean to insinuate that their passing games timing would less affected than our running games, just that their passing game timing may be less affected than our passing game due to the shear number of passes they have thrown this year.

That being said, our offense may be less affected overall, but we may not get the almost flawless game from GMac that we got in the SECCG.

re: The time has come!-pick the score-bama-texas! And give reasons!-NO smack with rivals

Their run defense is not a fluke or a mirage. They've handled more rushing attempts than us and allowed much fewer yards. They are only allowing 2.0 yds/attempt. True - some of this is a consequence of facing offenses who are not very good at rushing. But you don't lead the nation (by a wide margin, mind you) in both fewest total rushing yards allowed and fewest yards per attempt solely on the debatable rushing weakness of their Big 12 opponents. There's some defensive skill involved in that accomplishment as well.
They are a capable run defense against Big XII teams, but they would be about 4th or 5th in run defense if they played in the SEC. That's just the truth. Against the best run team they face (OSU), they gave up 134 yards rushing. Keep in mind that the best run team they played is still a passing team and were behind for the majority of that game. OSU's run game got exposed against Ole Miss, Ole Miss held OSU to about the same amount of rushing yards...just saying.

Well then please enlighten us with your brilliance. Add to the discussion. List the 3 reasons you feel Texas wins on Thursday. We really do enjoy discussing football with our opponent's fans. We have had great posts from Sooners, Hokies, and Utes the last couple of years.

Mea culpa.....no offense intended

Simply a comment regarding the number of 'bama fans who think this will be a wider margin than the Vegas wise guys think
Look at Texas. Isn't it the second or third most populous state? Not to mention there is a lot of wealth there, I mean Texas has a 12 billion dollar endowment. Bama doesn't even have a billion dollar endowment. I guarantee you its the die hard Texans sitting on a lot of money holding the spread down.

Plus nobody knows football like the diehard fans who watch it week in and week out.

Vegas people might "think" Bama will win by 30 or vice versa. That number is there to get people to spend money on a team (half the $ for UT-half for Bama).

I'm just wanting to see your pick for the score and reasons since that's what this thread is about. The threads have topics for a reason....that's all.

There's a thread on here from the Texas board where people are picking Texas by as much as 48-10! I don't think you'll see anything that outlandish here.

But it's a football game, and ultimately, that's what it is....so I'm going to welcome you for joining Tidefans and consider you to be a fellow football fan and a bud. If we argue, it's all in fun.

re: The time has come!-pick the score-bama-texas! And give reasons!-NO smack with rivals

I've been going back and forth on this one for a while as to how close or not this game will be.
I'm concerned as most are, with the amount of time off prior to this game and how that may affect our teams play. I agree with what another poster said, that the team that handles this better has the edge early, and it will go a long way in determining the outcome of the game.
Either way, both teams will have the same challenge in that regard and I trust CNS's approach to that challenge as he's been there before and expect he'll have the team prepared. I don't expect a repeat of last years game with Utah.

I don't think UT has seen a team that is as physical in the run game as Bama is. I think that will play to Alabama's favor because in that sense, Bama can and will play ball control and keep McCoy on the sidelines, just as they did to UF/Tebow in the SECCG.
I suspect that Alabama's offense will commit to wearing them down defensively by running the ball early and often, and then come out passing.
Bama's defensive secondary will be tested with the McCoy/Shipley tandem, but I think they'll be up to the task, and our defense will try and frustrate McCoy into making mistakes. I expect McClain, Reamer, Anders, Arenas and Dareus to do just that.

I give all the respect in the world to Texas, they deserve to be in this game, and imo, are really the only other team we will have played that is on par with UF.
I'm not overlooking them at all, both teams have had close calls with rival opponents, but its clear both deserve to be in this game and it should be whale of a game. Really one of the best ones in a long time.
I just believe imho, that Bama is a little better all around and particularly along both sides of the lines, and that combined with a strong and physical running game and sound special teams play very well may be the difference here. I also sense a hunger factor there, that is probably stronger for Alabama. It was true of the SECCG and I think its true of this matchup. I forgot to add, I like our coaching staff in this one as well, especially the head man. I don't think there is any better, imho.

Could be closer, but I hope not.

Bama offense vs Texas Defense.......23 points (2 TDs, 3 FGs)

Texas offense VS Bama Defense.......13 points (1 TD, 2 FGs)

Defensive/Special Teams TDs -- I think it's a 50/50 shot at either getting points......so I see it as two possibilities

30 Bama // Texas 13

or

23 Bama // Texas 20

I'll take either, but I'm leaning

30 Bama
13 Texas

You are partially right. The bookies balance the betting by adjusting the line..

BUT, smart sports bettors aren't going to miss a shot at a "gimme" line like Alabama-4

I think this game will be a low scoring defensive slugfest won by the team who makes the fewest mistakes. If I were a betting man, I would bet the "under", not the team.
Kind of a cop-out, IMO.

The Thread is entitled "Pick the score, and give reasons!"

So, since you have decided to enlighten us with your opinions, in this thread, how about picking the score and giving your reasons?

You bring out a great point Cat when you talk about physical. I remember when both Florida State and Miami dominated college football because of team speed, which is Texas's biggest asset. Both FSU and Miami now struggle because they continue to think that team speed is a priority over big AND fast.

Texas is smallish and very fast. Bama is largish and very fast. That makes us "Physical". And in games of this magnitude, the most physical team normally wins. When you get to a game like this you can't win with smoke and mirrors. If one team can line up and run over you then it really doesn't matter if you run a 9.0 second 100 yard dash, especially if the more physical team can run a 9.7. That's still pretty fast.

I've used this axiom many times.."You might can outrun a freight train, but if you're a Nascar racer don't get on the track and go head to head in an attempt to stop it from getting to the depot".

I think the physical aspect of this game will indeed be the determining factor in Bama's favor.

Good points...

Sip
