Thread on Arkansas board about the upcoming Bama matchup

well, more than a few people i know have said the same thing....
my reply is simple. maybe it's not who WE have played. maybe it's because we make the people we play look like nobody...

If they get frizzled I will be worried. The only thing that gives me solice at this point is that we have the best offense at Bama maybe ever or at least since the 70's. That and we have our playmaker's in every aspect of the game, for example Trent returning kickoff's and Julio returning punts. The odds stack up in our favor at this point but all it takes is a bad day by some of our players and we could lose. But if we show up and play our game and execute I dont think anyone could beat us. If both teams play their best, I say we win by ten to fourteen points. If we play our best and they don't, we win by twenty or more. However, I don't believe we can just roll in there and play poorly and still win. If they play their best and we don't, they will beat us. I'm counting on our defense at least making them earn their points, and I hope our offense pounds the ball and uses clock most of the time. Bring them up to the line, and then bomb them into submission.
 
I may be the only one but I think our secondary will be fantastic in this game. I'm more concerned about the run defense now. They've slopped through the first few games as though they were uninterested. That aggravated me. Last year it was us giving up points on kick offs or occasionally playing down to the competition (Kentucky). Dareus is still getting his feet under him and it will take this game for him to really show up. Arkansas is deadly in the passing game but nowhere near as Bama. The D will show up and Bama will show out!!
 
I dont mean to be rude, but I dont understand their optimism about this game. We've blown them out the last two seasons. We've absolutely embarrassed them. The same guy is the quarterback and hes once again receiving a lot of hype from the media. Their defense still allows plenty of points. If they let Georgia have nearly 400 yards of offense, we should be in good shape. I believe history will repeat itself this Saturday.

a lot of the "refs are against us" sentiment dates back to last year's game against Florida - the team of refs was actually suspended after that game for making bad calls and if I remember right it is the only time that has ever happened

the refs really did hand that game to Florida

then against Georgia there were some bad calls late in the game that pushed the dawgs down the field - the most obvious one was the holding non-call

I don't know your age and whether you know or not, but the Hogs have had two laughers handed to them over Bama by the zebras. Once a winning TD with twelve on the field and the other with a one-hopper TD pass. I don't think there'll be much sympathy around here for the ref conspiracy theory...

Short passes aren't the major concern with Arky IMHO, it's the deep ball we need to be more aware of. If we force them to have to try and dink and dunk it down the field all day we should be more than fine IMHO.

Lets see...one of those was the '95 win in Tuscaloosa I believe and the other the comeback from 31-0?
 
Like someone said earlier....I live dead in the center of these Hogs and they believe that this game is in the bag. I've never seen a more confident fan base. Having a huge Bama - Ark party on Saturday and will be over ran wih Arkansas fans. I figure they will be gone about mid way through the 3rd.
 
The number of "make McElroy beat us with his arm" are astounding. I think if I'd had a QB drop 2.9 bills on me, I'd remember it...

We'll remind them Saturday. Our offense this year can line up and beat defenses however they want. Our passing game is better than I expected so far and our running game is as explosive as ever. Can't get much better than this. I'm young, but this is probably the best offense we've had in my lifetime.
 
Oh, and our OL is either "inferior" or "suspect." We're running heavily right behind a RS freshman ROT. You'd think it'd start to add up that we replaced two all-Americans with two future all-Americans. They're either delusional or we're in deep doo-doo. Saturday will tell...
 
The worst thing for Arkansas is to face a focus and driven Bama team. If Bama plays with the intensity and focus through 60 minutes and let let up at times like they did against Duke, then this game will get ugly very quickly. There are players on Arkansas I like, but they haven't been punched in the mouth yet, and something tells me they won't like getting punch in the mouth.
 
Arky. Meh. Just wait till Saturday hogs.

How do you guys think Bobby is training his guys this week? Are they emphasizing pressure this week?

I know our secondary has the skills to be an elite group. But to look at Dre and Millner and Lowery and compare them to the physcial bodies of Kareem and Javi leaves no doubt that they will be easier for a mature reciever to block them on the run game. Menzie is another story no doubt. They also probably cant jam recievers at the line as well either. Marquis was no gym rat either and was undersized but he did great his senior year after struggling previously. I just hope our db's physicalness can match their skill set. Thats what it is going to take for this year to turn out great. They will grow up fast because they are going to get baptized by fire.
 
I'm a bit confused by this widespread notion that Arkansas is so much improved this year.

The defense has better statistics (20 pts. less per game average compared to last year at this time), but let's be realistic about who they've played:

  1. An FCS school that went 6-5 last year
  2. A school that lost to Arkansas State by 2 TDs
  3. An SEC team without its top player, starting a freshman QB and a new defensive staff and scheme

Georgia had more yards against the Arkansas defense than they did against Louisiana-Lafayette. South Carolina held Georgia to almost 150 yards less total offense than did Arkansas. South Carolina also solidly beat Georgia, while Arkansas had to put on a show in the last minute of the game to pull it out after watching Georgia erase a 2 TD deficit in about a six-minute span. If 2 more minutes had been on the clock, would Arkansas have been able to stop Georgia?

Statistically, the Arkansas offense isn't as dangerous as it was last year at this time (538 ypg, 45 ppg after 2 games last season compared to 484 ypg and 35 ppg after 3 games this season).

Regarding the "make McElroy beat us with his arm" strategy... why do they believe that strategy will work better for them this season than it did last season? McElroy is far more experienced and confident, Julio is healthy and there are now more proven receivers to complement him.

I guess Arkansas is this year's fad. I expect that the announcers will fall all over themselves fawning over Mallet during the first half. By the middle of the third quarter, they'll be telling everybody how they knew that Alabama's young defense would rise to the occasion and that McElroy keeps proving himself to the doubters.

I agree, reminds me of Ole Miss last season -- except they beat GA where Ole Miss lost to SoCarolina in a early season road test against a middling Eastern Division foe. Reality should be settling in soon . . .
