Rumor has it that Mark Gottfried will not return as head bkb coach at Alabama and that Tubby Smith is the top choice to replace Gottfried. I think that would be a very good hire for Bama. I also think Tubby Smith would love to come back to the SEC. He's done a tremendous job at Minnesota.

Dear Santa,

We Alabama Basketball fans would like 1 Tubby Smith for Christmas please....no bike, just good coaching:biggrin:

thanks

The OP has PMed me about this and it's based on statements by a Nashville sportscaster. Even though it contravenes our rumor policy, I regard it as just a guess anyone could make who knows the friendships, etc., among the parties. If I find out anything that's not generally known, and which I can let out, I'll post it. For now, I think CMG's tenure is at an end, probably at year's end. It's no secret that CM has a firm relationship with CMM and others and that he has respect for and a friendship with Tubby. So, it's no trick to connect the dots. Will it come off? I don't think anyone knows at this point...

I hate the the odds are so against CMG. As a person, he seems like a nice individual. Forget about the fanbase, I think he's slowly losing the team. I don't think players are believing anymore. When that happens, it's time to make a change. CMG is a good basketball coach who will land a gig elsewhere most likely.

Let's see if we can rally behind the team at least for the rest of the year.

the report from Nashville radio was pesented as strong speculation. Earle, the dots were connected pretty much like you said; there is a short degree of separation involved.

They went on to say that he wouldn't like leaving the minn. job after only two years, but to be able to come to a place like BAMA where one can recruit and win consistently would be too attractive for him to pass it up. He would have the chance to do better here than he did at uga, provided he hasn't slipped as a coach.

Whatever happens will happen, but I have met CMG on several occasions spaning 10 years. He is a nice guy and I did enjoy our converstions. I just hope we can conduct ourselves in a mature manner without being too critical of him.

cause it would hurt the university?! maybe cmg needs to heed some of that advise and in a mature manner... step down. it's hard to not be critical of him; especially when he is his own worst enemy.

CMG likes to appear like a schoolboy that would so no wrong to the general public, but to the folks in the athletic office, he's as cocky as they come.....

I hope that my post didn't come off as too harsh on CMG...I was making light of the situation. I guess what makes this hard is that over the last several years, we have had talent on the floor, but obvious disadvantage with coaching seems to be the different in winning the close games. It reminds me when we played a game with Shula at the helm, it felt like we spotted 10 points to the other team in coaching right off the bat. CMG seems to be a nice guy which many of you state. I wish him the best after his tenure at Bama.:BigA:

I see why the mods have to lock bball threads so quickly.:)

Now, back to Tubby. I think anyone who has his type of resume would be great, but I'm not sure it would be an easy sell unless TS hates cold weather. Minn. historically has a good bball program and a good fanbase. He can compete in the Big-10. I would like to see us have an actual search and see resumes come in (or back-channel feelers) as opposed to us asking them. I just think the program could benefit from getting someone who wants the job (actively seeking it). When CMG was first hired you could see the energy and enthusiasm in him. I'm not saying gauging interest is a bad idea I just worry about fixating on one and only one guy before any move has been made.

I could certainly live with a Tubby hire. :)

Coleman would be packed night after night.

Well, I've learned that CM is not going to have the influence I thought he would. I don't know whether I feel good or bad about that...

You mean the most successful coach in our school's history and arguably the sport's classiest guy . . . Earle, I am ecstatic that we have such wise people in charge of our basketball program. :conf2:

Hey....my Dad's a nice guy too, but I don't think he should coach the BB team.
Most criticism I've seen is of the coaching job he's being well paid to do. And might I add, it's rightly deserved.

As far as Tubby Smith, I think it would be a good hire and a definite step up. Don't ya know he'd love to coach a Bama team to a win in Lexington. :)

I'm with Twin. This is unbelievable! :mad2:

Back to the idea of Tubby Smith... anyone have any insight on what the real chances of this would be if we have an opening at the end of the year? The thought of Tubby on the sidelines of Coleman Coliseum in red is really exciting to me!
