UA athletic Dept Posts $33m Profit

For those who need reminding that Dr Witt was not a smoke blower:

"Nick Saban’s the best financial investment this university has ever made,” he said. “We have made an investment that’s been returned many fold.”

While Dr Witt believes that the hiring of Nick Saban was the best investment the University ever made.....he was probably wrong. The best investment the University ever made was hiring Dr Witt. Enrollment has gone from 19,000+ to 36,000+ under his guidance. Now the entire University System is benefitting from his leadership.

Some have joked about Auburn's buyouts being the reason they don't make as much as Alabama. Seems to be the case. Link

A glimpse into the finances of Alabama and Auburn shows two very different stories.

Alabama, owner of one of the most lucrative football programs in the country, posted a $33 million surplus in its 2013-14 financial report to the NCAA. Auburn, on the other hand, had a deficit of $13.7 million.

How can two athletic departments with prestigious SEC football programs, in one of the most football-crazy states in the country, have such different financial outlooks?

I'm glad the athletic program is making more money than the University and giving part of it to help the University. The BOT may have to cut the President's excessive 535K salary.

Wow. I did not know enrollment was up to 36,000+. I thought it was approaching 30,000. Dr Witt was a great president.

Just as a side note: The Auburn president makes 2.5+ million/Yr... Why?

He doesn't. Link

"The total reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education's annual presidential compensation report of $2,542,865 is the sum of Gogue's base salary ($482,070), deferred compensation paid ($1,809,145), deferred compensation set aside ($250,000) and retirement pay set aside ($1,650)," Clardy said.

What I found interesting from this very basic income statement was the line of "Support staff (univ.)". Alabama was $2,883,786 while Auburn was $20,748,738.

That just doesn't make any sense as Auburn must be running something though the Athletic department that Alabama is not.

Maybe it would have helped if there a separate line item for the bag man.
