USC / Bama game question

Welcome to the best site on the net. USC is a favorite of mine since I spent a couple years living just off the campus, 30th and Orchard, while my girlfriend went there and I went to Cal State Fullerton. Helped her family manage their properties that they rented to students at USC. I became good friends with USC'S 1996 Olympic gold medalist Balasz Kiss.

Tide Fans - Great board you guys have here. Been reading it for a few weeks now and decided to sign up to chatter about the game. Most reasonable Trojan fans are under no delusions about winning this game. Bama's got the experience, the talent and most of all the coaching that USC doesn't have. I would only give USC a 10% shot at winning. That being said, what have opponents done over the past few years that have kept games close? I've watched Bama a few times but don't know enough to provide an educated response. Thanks in advance for your replies. Hope to see y'all in Dallas. Fight on!

Thanks for chiming in. Great to have you here, and please do stay once the game has been played. It's always refreshing to have a perspective of someone whose glasses aren't crimson colored.

To answer your question, there are 4 observations that I've made, the first one, I don't think you can do anything about and the other three, maybe you can because two center around QB play and the other is based on what we do..

1. Catch Bama the week after a big game. Whether it's 2008 after losing the SECCG to Florida or in 2012 after winning in the last minute vs. LSU, the players (just like the fans) tend to dwell on the game a little too much instead of looking ahead (although Nick preaches the 24 hour rule)

2. Have a QB that can run and pass well (Cam Newton / Deshaun Watson).

3. Have a QB play the game of his life (Stephen Garcia, Johnny Manziel, Trevor Knight). Your guy is more than capable of doing that.

4. Otherwise, not even saying it arrogantly, Bama has to beat Bama. The team is talented enough to overcome flaws and bad play at times. Sometimes, though, (TAMU 2012, Ole Miss 2015, Ohio St. 2014) the mistakes made (and credit to other teams for helping to create those mistakes) are just too much to overcome.

It could happen. I certainly hope it doesn't, though. And again, welcome.

Labor day weekend can't get here quick enough. I just booked a flight to Dallas. It will be my first time on a plane since 1978 but I don't care about driving 12 hours. RTR!!!

Welcome PepsiTrojan!! I'm in Los Angeles and I will be keeping an eye on the Trojans this year. My boss is a HUGE SC fan.....Sorry, but I hope we beat ya...BIG

This is a game we have all been looking forward to. These are two of the top programs ever, so historically it's fascinating and relevant. I tend to believe the game is going to be closer than some of our other big non-conference season openers. In terms of talent and toughness I'd say USC > Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, Michigan, etc.

However, if Alabama comes out and rolls over the Trojans, it will be a very impressive win. The analysis of this matchup is one I look forward to seeing and discussing.

I agree, USC is going to be one of the better teams we face all season. A win against them will have a HUGE impact on our program in general. Think of it like this, beating Clemson when we played them in Atlanta helped open up the doors in recruiting GA and FL. Beating teams like Michigan and Wisconsin helped bolster our name on the national level. Beating USC will really help our efforts in recruiting on the West Coast and help make us battle-ready for the opponents we will face throughout the year. If the guys stay hungry and focused, we will be in for a very special season. Same with USC ... if they beat Stanford IN Stanford, they have to be considered the team to beat in the pac-12

Get turnovers and hope for missed FGs.

If you get turnovers or missed FGs, capitalize. Opponents have averaged 17.2 points off the turnovers and missed FGs in the five losses.

17 points in mistakes is hard to overcome against a good team!!! When this happens it is often just the case of "Bama beating Bama."

Yep, yep, yep!

Hey, welcome PepsiTrogan. I'm personally a Coke guy, but we can agree to disagree about that.

BTW, I think Bama and USC have the two most recognizable fight songs in college football (with an honorable mention to Michigan).

Fight On and Yea Alabama!!!
