USCe vs LSU penalty

Yes, there should have been no penalty, but the USCe player shouldn't just left it alone. Nuss isn't chasing that guy down to tackle him.

But this one just one of several incompetent calls. At one point in the game Autrey, in identifying the player guilty of the penalty got the # wong 3 times in a row. 3 times. I realize this happens occasionally, but 3 times in a row. It was so bad Herbstreit was making fun of it, tongue in cheek of course.

Second, the bigger issues here is the wussification of football in general and especially not being able to tackle the QB. I think in the same game, a USC player hit Nuss right after he released the ball, but not late. It was a very clean hit, he didn't drive him into the ground, didn't use his helmet inappropriately...nothing at all wrong with it, but it was ruled "roughing the QB." I don't know what defensive players are supposed to do anymore!

It's Autry's crew - the worst in the land. Their beyond terrible officiating will probably cost someone a game every week. Sure did cost us the game against the Viles a couple of years ago. The SEC must be hard up for officials if his crew is still working SEC games.

Not going to happen. Autrey's team has been consistently bad for so long that poor performance has become the expectation. It's going to take a reorganization of the league complete with full-time professional officials to change the officiating issues, and there's no guarantee things get better even then.

I don't know, when I watch NFL games those guys are pretty efficient and predictable. Exactly what you'd expect for officials who are "full time."

I do not have a dog in the fight between USCe and LSU.
I realize that when a QB throws a pick he goes from being a defenseless player to being a potential tackler.
And I bet guys used to be (and maybe still are) coached, "If there is a pick, find the QB and knock the crap out of him because he is fair game." I think when there is a pick, officials will look for someone blindsiding the QB.

Kennard hit him with his hands, but it was a good lick that laid Nussmeier out.
On the scale of how big an effect this had on the game outcome, I think it was enormous. LSU would have found themselves down two scores.
My take is that I hope Alabama defensive players are smart and realize that, after a pick, the officials will look for the QB and someone knocking the crap of him and they will throw the flag. Instead, I hope Bama players just get a block. Nussmeier was not going to be likely to make the tackle anyway, so do not give the officials an excuse to throw the flag and call back a 100 yard pick-six.
ANd I realize that an Alabama player knocked the absolute crap out of Aaron Murray of Georgia after a pick. Murry';s fillings were probably loosened by that hit. Still, rules have changed since then and you have to be smart enough to pick up on that.

Fair point. The close up view makes it look like Nuss got blindsided, but I will concede the point.

Probably, but protecting him from what?! He’s running to make a play. He was pushed on the shoulder pads. I get that it’s a call they make, but that was mighty weak.

Because the same "rules" don't apply to QBs anymore.

After the INT he technically is a "defender" but now the refs are taught to "protect" them.

Can't tackle a QB anymore when they are on offense either.

It's is shame what has become of the game. I'm all for safety, but it's not a safe sport and if you strap it up it should still be tackle football, even if you play QB.

Given that we got called for a similar penalty last year against A&M that could have cost us the game, I don't mind the call. That block on Nussmeier, whether you want to call it a roughing call or a blindside block, was the same as Dallas Turner's penalty that got called on the blocked kick TD return.

I think the block in question falls in scenario (b); No foul. The player shoved with his hands which may not fit the definition of "extended hands" and borders on "forcible contact" which could be interpreted as a foul (if a ref actually saw the contact).

The player should not have shoved when making the block and coaches need to emphasize that.

Some of you are missing the point. Why do it? Don't let the ref make the call, whether right or wrong. What was Nuss gonna do, tackle the guy on the return? I doubt it. He saw a chance to take a cheap shot on the QB and took it. You forced the ref to make a decision and it went against you. I wouldn't have called it but some do. Just a dumb play.

That is exactly my point. I hope Bama coaches and Bama players are paying attention to that point. Yeah, a d-lineman wants to knock the crap out of a QB, but this hit removed a USCe TD late in the game that would have been the winning margin.
There are only so many sets of officials' eyeballs on the field and after a pick, I can almost guarantee one set of them is on the QB looking for someone hitting the QB. Just do not give the officials a chance to get that call wrong. Take the game-winning TD instead.
