Utah's offense

Against whom though?
1999 Las Vegas Bowl - Fresno State
2001 Las Vegas Bowl - USC
2003 Liberty Bowl - Southern Miss
2004 Fiesta Bowl - Pittsburgh
2005 Emerald Bowl - Georgia Tech
2006 Armed Forces Bowl - Tulsa
2007 Poinsettia Bowl - Navy

Just to note, I do not believe Utah has ever played an SEC team in a bowl game.

Hey Snowute I was looking at your offensive #'s. It looks like you guys are around 60% pass 40% run. Is that about right? I think I read that it is the same formations as UF only you guys try and establish the pass a little more than they do.

Ute fan here. We don't run a pure spread offense like we did in 2004. Brian Johnson is more of a pocket passer than an option guy now due to some injuries. We run a fair amount of Wildcat with Matt Asiata taking the snap. We also use a tight end quite a bit as a receiver in the red zone. Our bread and butter lately is the short passing game. Our receivers are pretty sure-handed and big enough to go across the middle.

60-40 sounds about right.

We run a lot of the same stuff as Florida as UM was here first, but we also run quite a bit of the "wildcat" we have been doing this since UM left. We have two really good backs, one a big power guy, the other a methodical runner who gets better as the game goes on. We also being our Back Up qb in a few time every game to run quick sweeps as he is the fastest guy on the team

I see possibilities...

Vinny Gambini: It is possible that the two utes...
Judge Chamberlain Haller: ...Ah, the two what? Uh... uh, what was that word?
Vinny Gambini: Uh... what word?
Judge Chamberlain Haller: Two what?
Vinny Gambini: What?
Judge Chamberlain Haller: Uh... did you say 'utes'?
Vinny Gambini: Yeah, two utes.
Judge Chamberlain Haller: What is a ute?
[beat]
Vinny Gambini: Oh, excuse me, your honor...
[exaggerated]
Vinny Gambini: Two YOUTHS.

This is the rest of Utah's bowl history:
1939 Sun Bowl - New Mexico - win
1947 Pineapple Bowl - Hawaii - loss
1964 Liberty Bowl - West Virginia - win
1992 Copper Bowl - Washington St. - loss
1993 Freedom Bowl - USC - loss
1994 Freedom Bowl - Arizona - win
1996 Copper Bowl - Wisconsin - loss

So, no, they haven't played an SEC team in a bowl.

I wish some of these upstart programs would actually win something meaningful,,, and no I do not count the Las Vegas bowl as meaningful, before their fans start talking smack at the fans of a school who have.
What a joke and an embarrasment to their fan base.

To add to GreatDanish's post:
99 Las Vegas Bowl - Utah 17, Fresno St. 16
01 Las Vegas Bowl - Utah 10, Southern Cal. 6
03 Liberty Bowl - Utah 17, So. Miss 0
04 Fiesta Bowl - Utah 35, Pitt. 7
05 Emerald Bowl - Utah 38, Georgia Tech. 10
06 Armed Forces - Utah 25, Tulsa 13
07 Poinsettia Bowl - Utah 35, Navy 32

Obviously, they have a habit of winning bowl games. There are a couple of opponents that are well respected. In the 2001 Las Vegas Bowl, they held Southern Cal to only one yard rushing.
Overall though, their bowl opponents are not SEC caliber teams. Not so sure that means very much as every team has to reinvent itself annually. We can attest to that.

I hope our fans don't take this game for granted, even to a small degree, because we shouldn't.

Looking over the Utah schedule, you might be inclined to think that Michigan and Oregon State represent the best wins for the team this year. But the win against TCU is more solid, in my opinion. I think you have you have to look at how a team plays against a variety of offensive and defensive schemes. That shows something about their balance and versatility.

No matter what you think of Michigan, the Wolverines still took the field with superior athletes to Utah. I am sure Michigan thought they would line up and impose their will. Then you look at BYU and their inability to put up many points against Utah. Or TCU, with a very balanced offense, that couldn't get it done.

Don't get me wrong, I think we're going to win. But this Utah team is not all gadgetry and gimmicks; they play football and they do it well.

As a fan, I take this game very seriously. I am just hoping that the players can find the motivation to prepare for this game (aka Saban in your face).

I think Utah's had a great year, but I just don't think you can seriously compare their schedule strength to ours. Having said that, they'll be fired up for us.

Florida was good prep for us. I see us wearing them down and going away with it.

According to Sagarin, Bama's sos is 56 and Utah's is 71, so they aren't that different. Of course, we're not playing each other's schedule, we're playing each other, so it really doesn't matter much at this point.

I think you'll be surprised at how well Utah plays you guys.

In 2004 they went 12-0, including a BCS bowl win (Fiesta - and they didn't pick Pitt as an opponent). This is about as much as you can ever ask of any team. Their OOC schedule included aTm, Arizona, & North Carolina. They finished the season ranked #4. I would have loved to see them play Auburn that year instead of Pitt...

Your win over TCU impressed me enough to believe that we will have to play well to win. TCU's defense is very impressive...

Oh I assure everybody...we're going to have to come to play at maximum intensity. There's no "gimmees" at this point of the season. And undefeated is undefeated. I think we'll be pumped for this one though. The seniors want to leave on a super positive note.

We try to win something meaningfull but the Bowl committy will not put us there unless we go undefeated and beat 3 ranked teams in a season like we have this year. Bama will not come because there isn't enough money in it for them. We are on the rise and it is going to be a test for the Tide!
