UT's run defense

I stick by my :running at will" statement. Going back watching game film from some of our toughest games, our RB's don't fall on first contact. They have more yardage on average after contact than they do before.

So how has Texas been winning? They've been getting turnovers and capitalizing on them. TT had 3 turnovers, OU had 5 turnovers, OSU had 5, A&M had 2, and Nebraska had 3. They barely managed to beat an Oklahoma without Bradford despite the fact that OU turned the ball over 5 times.

Here's a scary thought for Texas. Alabama has only turned the ball over 10 times the entire season. 4 of those were in one game (SC). Including that game, we average less than a turnover a game. Excluding the game we average less than half a turnover a game. That rounds down to zero. Texas has been crippled when they don't get turnovers. They managed 537 yards on UCF but only scored 35 points, and they kept Colt in well into the fourth quarter.

And btw, the most yards Bama has given up this season was 341. Just saying.

To add to the comment about Alabama's low number of turnovers... Greg has not thrown an interception in the second half as far as I can tell. that is impressive.

Wrong. They should be #1 because they are. Teams that had every intention of running the ball on Texas abandoned it early as they often fell behind early. This defense has speed and power at all 3 levels. That said, 'Bama's run game will be a great challenge to Texas' defense. I feel if they can shut Ingram down, much like Auburn did, Texas has a great shot. Cannot wait until next Thursday. Happy New Year, Tide fans. Hook 'Em!!

My my my it seems the closer we get to game time the nastier it gets....... LMAO... I think maybe I will just sit back and enjoy the ride and listen to brown tell me how great we are in case I forget~!~ :)

Man, Mack Brown is definitely laying it on thick to the media. I'm sure he is playing up the underdog role to his players. That seems to be the easy way to get players' attention these days. I'm sure we will hear the players talking about getting their respect during the game or after the game if they beat us. I can hear the quotes already: "We shocked the world!" "Nobody gave us any respect, so we came out and took it!" Blah, blah, blah. Texas is very good. Bama is very good. They will play next week to see who wins the national championship. Roll Tide.

My daughter wants me to add that Bama is the best. Roll Tide.

I find myself thinking that Richardson should begin the game for this very reason. His success in running the ball could only help to demoralize TX, and his failure to run wouldn't provide a great deal of confidence to the TX Defense. However, stopping Ingram on the first set of downs would definitely increase momentum & moral.

Richardson is a great running back and I have confidence in his ability. This could possibly take some Heisman/Championship stress off of Ingram as well…

What is it that tejas fans can't understand about this stat? :rolleyes:

It would seem obvious that no one tejas plays is very successful running the ball. I'm not talking running the ball against tejas. I'm talking running the ball against anybody.

It's like bragging that your team held Texas Tech to 10 yards rushing, and not telling everyone that TT threw it 65 times and ran twice.

Great points. The first 'Bama series will be huge, largely because of what you were able to do against Florida.

As I said above, I'd expect to open the game as against UF - with passing. However, UF said that was what they wanted us to do, that they would eat us alive if we did. I seem to have heard echoes of that attitude lately...

With UT facing virtually no good rushing attack, you still think we pass first? I don't think it's a bad idea b/c it did seem to throw UF off their gameplan, even if they claimed to want us to throw it; I am just curious if UT doesn't bring a safety up if we have 2 plays called (one run, one pass) depending on how UT lines up. Heck, opening up in the Wildcat would also be really interesting.

Face it, for 2-3 games in midseason, Greg wasn't throwing that well. He's been throwing the last 3-4 like an NFL draftee. I expect UT to open up with eight guys within 2-3 yds of the LOS and two more ready to walk up. We let AU get away with that until almost the end of the game. The UF game was a natural outgrowth of the AU. We never gave UF a chance even to try it. They had to start defending the pass right away. Any running game can be stopped by putting enough men on the LOS. The only way we start out running most of the time will be if our staff doesn't believe they can stop our run by jamming the LOS. It was obvious that we didn't believe that AU could stop our run, even by jamming, but they could. That's the reason for my opinion.

i agree, if they want to put 8 in the box that leaves Julio, Maze, Hanks in one on one and Peek covered by a LB...i like those odds.
 
Don't care what we open up with just do not turn the ball over.. tejas has made a living off of the pass happy 12 conference and the key for our offense is to play our game, not make mental errors on the OL and DO NOT TURN IT OVER~!~

I agree, it is not a secret that if Greg McElroy doesn't play well Bama doesn't move the ball. I expect quite a few short passes to Julio Jones to start the game. I also think we will see a few 4 and 5 wide sets early on. Once we back the UT defense off Mark Ingram will begin pounding the defense between the tackles.
