JessN: Vanderbilt wrap-up: An inexcusable loss, but a loss UA must bounce back from

I'm going to be "that guy" for a minute...

Bear Bryant lost to Vanderbilt once and tied them 2-3 more times while at UA. He turned out pretty good.

Let's slow roll this "Vandy loss means death to all" mentality that a lot of people are getting into right now.
@JessN I'll agree and go one further. I remember my sophomore year at the Capstone and we had a brand new coach taking over a team that had gone to the Sugar Bowl the year prior. We opened the season with one of those teams that "you can't lose to", except it was Southern Miss, not Vanderbilt. Much the same reaction as we have now. In fact, we lost the next two games after that (Florida and Georgia) by a total of 4 points, then things got going.

I know people will dismiss that now by saying, "Oh, well that Southern Miss team had Brett Favre". Well, as Pat Dye used to say, hindsight is 50/50... We didn't really know that Brett Favre was "Brett Favre" in September of 1990...

All of that said, that Stallings guy turned out to be pretty OK...

This is not the same Vandy team that we are not used to Agree 100%

And won 7 out of the last 8 that year.

@jess Now that we're five games in, do you still feel as confident Wommack was as solid of a hire as you first thought? Personally I think he will ultimately show it was a solid hire. We just are seeing a lot of things that come with program transition mixed with the new landscape of college football, portal, NIL etc.

I'm waiting and seeing. I don't think he's been quick enough (so far) on adjustments but that's why we talk about learning curves in the SEC. His ability to ramp up will ultimately tell the tale.

And just like that, Vandy beats Kentucky to go 4-2 on the season, despite being outgained 288-322 yards. Given the rest of their schedule, I don't think the magic lasts, but like others have said: this ain't your daddy's Vandy.

They still might not make a bowl game.

One time out of numerous other occasions and you're excited? This is not tiddlywinks, it's real ballin' and 17 - 22-year-olds need thumping when necessary, as do assistants.

I didn't say CKD's reaction got me excited, but what is clear is that he has gotten mad more than once, and let the refs know. He isn't the same person or personality as CNS, so any expectation that he needs to slamming headsets and yelling uncontrollably like CNS did at times needs to be tempered. CKD isn't the same person as CNS - in fact, no one is. It is also clear given the number of penalties in the last couple of years of CNS' tenure that despite his best efforts, some players weren't responding to CNS' style either.
