OJ was good but don't think he ever reached his potential. Irv Smith Jr was really good. The most successful NFL TE we ever had besides Ozzie was Howard Cross who played in the 80's for us. Spent 13 years with the Giants and has a couple of Super Bowl rings.

I believe he was listed as an end at Bama and Green Bay as well as the HOF.
Yeah wide receiver didn't exist yet, not in name anyway. I remember in the 80s it was still listed as Flanker and Split end, and HB.

OJ Howard wSs the most physically gifted TE of the Saban era, but that's about it. He never lived up to his full potential. That championship game against Clemson made up for it, though.
I wonder if his NFL career would have been different if somebody like Belichick drafted him. He would've been perfect for some of their packages.

Penn State had two linebackers returning punts. Dennis Onkotz in the late '60s and Bill O' Brien (you remember him) had a linebacker returning punts for the Nittany Lions.

JMO, but Howard could not make a contested catch. That rules him out.

Ozzie lined up at both TE and WR during his career at Alabama. I think he played TE more than he did at WR so I'd consider him a TE and therefore the best at that position.
