Weather thread...

Some may remember I put a window AC unit in my 2 car garage back on 8-18.

I also installed a timer so it only runs about 12 hours per day.

I was curious to see how this would impact my utility bill.

Today I got my bill and while it only includes a read date of 6 days after the AC was installed (8-24), the total bill amount is only $1.30 more than last month.

We'll see what happens over a longer sample period but so far so good!
Is the garage insulated, Bazz?

Not in the conventional sense, no.

I *may* do something in the ceiling down the road, though.

The walls are all concrete block, which helps.

I guess the weak link is the fiberglass door. I really love this door because it's so light I can lift it by hand if need be.

On top of all that...it has 2 man doors, one of which leads to the side yard - actually a concrete pad that runs under the cantilevered section of the house, which was an add on by a previous owner. My thought is to enclose that entire area so the air conditioning in the garage will also flow out into this area, that could be used as a shop.

None of this is super complicated. Just a matter of budgeting the time to do it all. Like everything else we do. The constant shift of our priorities.

But your point is well taken about insulation. It also helps that the garage faces North....

Before we bought in Vail, we used to rent a house from a lady in Frisco City, Summit County, CO. The garage was insulated, but they hadn't done a very good job around the door. So, on our off days, when we weren't skiing, we stuffed the cracks. Made noticeable difference, when the temps are around zero outside...

We have had thunder storms just about every day for the last 5 days...sure has been nice. Nothing like this, however.

It's really getting dry around here. We are going to start watering the deer. They're so desperate, they're eating everything in sight, plants they never would touch before...
