Weightroom Report

I suppose we'll just agree to disagree - while I do believe strength won't be our weakness (HAR!) this fall, I've spent enough years playing football and lifting to know that being behind by a year or two makes a difference. If it didn't, guys wouldn't get bigger/stronger/faster throughout their collegiate and even NFL careers...

On that note a bit further can you imagine what kind of stars our backfield could look like having acclimated to a run for your life mentality and then actually line up behind a decent OL. If we can improve the OL to the point it should be then we could have some serious star potential.

Totally agreed, dude. Definitely felt like no matter what who we played last season, I almost always held my breath to see how our OL blocking performed, especially when we were passing. I almost was always expecting JPW to roll out or run out of the pocket just b/c he had to! Who knows how JPW could've done with a couple more seconds in the pocket.

True, it makes a difference, but as I'm sure you're aware, gains come more slowly the further you advance physically. Our young guys should be gaining strength more quickly than the rising seniors on other SEC lines, so I have hope that this off-season, as well as some depth chart shuffling, will do a lot to close the gap.

Exactly. We'll be able to close the gap dramatically just with this offseason's program. The rate of progress will begin to slow down the more we close the gap between us and other programs. Players can only get so strong then they begin to level out. By the time they take that next level of progress they're graduated. We're not that far behind.

Last season the major difference in touchdowns and fg's was about 10-12 inches. Due to lack of strength and passive blocking schemes we lost 10-12 inches on the LOS. Our line was either getting stoned and stood straight up at the point of attack or pushed back about a foot. On the goal line that is tremendous.

If we can't improve 10-12 inches then something is wrong. As another poster above has mentioned. These kids are at an age where they are growing and changing at a rapid rate. At the rate Saban has them lifting and to the degree he has them conditioning the improvement in the strength department should be evident this season.

I have to agree with you there. Just a small increase in strength, push and stamina would have made a big difference in the Ark and Tenn games, as well as Aub.

Baby steps. We aren't gonna catch up overnight. Our first priority is to at least make the O-line competitive. We suffered through Shula's clulessness for 4 years and it won't be reversed overnight, but dadgummit, there's no reason why we can't at least improve enough to impede the rushers. We've had lots of plays the last 4 years that never had the slightest chance because we didn't even slow the rush up, especially in the red-zone where our playcalling was so predictable. I fully expect us to be competitive this season, maybe not dominating, but competitive. :biga:

I agree, there were times when it would have been better if some of the linemen would have turned around and sacked JPW themselves at the snap of the ball.

I made it myself. :)
I, for one, am stunned that you were able to generate such an exact diagram yourself! Modern technology truly is breath-taking...

And yes, I understand - I stated earlier I expect to see dramatic differences - but some posters have been saying things as if our O-line will dominate everyone next season. Won't happen. We'll have good games, sure, and we'll be able to move the ball far more effectively, but we won't catch up in one off-season.

That's what I've been saying the whole time...

And that's all we need to do. We don't need to catch up to win ballgames. All we need to do is get better from last season and that would add three games to the win column by itself. Arkansas, Tenn, Auburn would have turned out much different if we would have had average run blocking.

Agreed.

In fact, outside of LSU, I think having an average O-line would have won us every game last year...

But I do see where you're coming from. We are behind in that our RS Freshmen from last year didn't lift like they should have and now are having to play catch up. I agree the overall "health" of our strength and conditioning program has some catching up to do and I believe Saban is doing just that.
