Kid has the yips, in my opinion. The missed catch Saturday in the end zone was particularly terrible.
The coaches cannot catch it for him, but if it is physical, then the coaches should be able to fix it. I heard CNS say once that coaching isn't yelling at a kid to "catch the ball." He knows he's supposed to catch it. He wants to catch it. He probably wants to catch it more than you want him to catch it. Coaching consists of figuring out why he isn't catching it, explaining it to him, and training him in techniques to ensure he catches it in the future. Our coaches know this.
All that works if his problem is physical (catching it with his body instead of his hands, looking away from the ball just before it arrives, etc.). If the problem is mental, not physical, it's much more complicated. If the problem is actually between his ears, it may not matter how many hours he spends with the JUGS machine.
I sincerely hope someone can help him figure it out for his own sake and the sake of the team. He has a world of potential and seems like a good man.
