Whats up with Wimp and Sonny?

Yeah, WJOX is in their annual "Screw up a good thing" mode. They cancelled Sonny and Wimp, which was probably the best thing they had on their station, yet they keep Herb, Ray, and Kelly on the air - which defies all sorts of logic. They also changed up the Roundtable, which was a good lunch time listen.

I drive a lot on the job, so if I'm not listening to the IPOD, I've got it on WJOX. However, I turn it to 1420 the Tusk in the mornings(To hear Chris Stewart) and in the afternoons(So I don't have to hear Herb, Ray, and Kelly).

Anyways, the Coaches were great together. The show was a fun listen, and they seemed to have a real good time doing it. I hate it that they're doing away with the show.

I always hated that show. I don't dislike the coaches I just thought the show had a small-time feel to it. Like it needed to be on in some town with a population of 30.

What's replacing it?

I don't really have a problem with Herb and Ray, they are a little Anti-Bama but not enough to really make me not listen. The Herb and Wimp show was mildly amusing at times but you can only listen to so much of two old men dribble on about stuff, plus you can hear that at every small town coffee house.

I agree getting rid of Jim Rome was a plus, his show had no redeeming value at all. No good info, no good predictions, no good guests, just Jim instulting everyone all the time.

Dunaway and Brown is the only good show on that station.

Ray, Herb, and Kelly are all idiots. They are embarassing to listen to.

Anybody know the exact details of the switching?

I think I heard Lance say something on the Roundtable about TK moving to mornings with Jay (talk about opposites), and Sonny & Wimp are talking about this being their final week. Anybody heard any "official" information about who's going where?

D & B are definitely the best thing going on JOX...they should have the 3-hour spot over the Big Time (plus they're 'Bama fans!).

I always made it a point to turn the channel when Wimp & Sonny were on...I hate that show and am glad it is gone. As for WJOX as a whole, it has two good shows and one really good show. I happen to really enjoy Jay & Matt most of the time in the mornings and so it gets a good rating from me. I also really enjoyed (until they've now decided to change it) the round table, which was a really, really good show to me and then I do enjoy D & B in the afternoons. It will be very interesting to say the least when they make the big switch.

I have no idea why they dumped Scott last year for Eli, even though I enjoyed Eli, I liked Scott better.

Their program director leaves a lot to be desired!

Sonny and Wimp...
Wimp and Sonny..
They weren't smart, nor were they funny..
They used to be coaches, they used to have clout....
But they sure didn't know what they were talkin' about..
Sonny and Wimp..
Wimp and Sonny..

Give me Finebaum any time. He does not know much about sports either, but he sure konws how to yank people's chains.

Couldnt agree more, and I did the same thing when I was workin....

Jay and Matt have always been the reason I listen to Jox, and to hear Ray Mellick on Monday am's show. However, I never could stand Wimp and Sonny either, and the WORST is the afternoon "bigtime" crew...they absolutely should've been the first to go...I have NOTHING against women on sports shows, but after adding Kelly, the thing went way downhill...it's really clear she's not on top of things half the time. Then there's Herb... Ray, while dry, and a UGA guy, is fairly impartial and objective, and generally makes insightful comments...it would be nice to see him moved to the am show with Jay & Matt, and axe the "big time" replacing those two losers (i.e., Kelly and Herb) with some better material...

Hopefully, the surgery at WJOX isn't over yet...

Matt just ran through an update of some of the changes:

Al Del Greco & Tony Kurre are joining Jay on the AM show

Matt is moving to 10-12 block

Lance (Roundtable I suppose) will only be 12-1

...and the coaches are gone

Apparently no change in the afternoons (ie, Big Time still around :conf2: )

They said there will be an article in Sunday's B'ham News about the changes...

Personally, I'm glad they're dropping Wimp and Sonny. I know a lot of people liked them, but I agree with one of the posters above. They sounded much too 'small time' to me personally. Good guys, but not good radio IMO. And the worst theme song EVER.

I don't dislike Matt Coulter, but I wonder how/if he's going to be able to handle a 2 hour show all on his own?

I hate that the Roundtable is getting cut back to only one hour and that they're splitting up Lance and Tony. That's one of my favorite shows. I actually think Kurre will make a good addition to the morning show and give it some much-needed spice. But the Roundtable was the only show in Birmingham that regularly covered pro sports.

Glad to see Dunnaway and Brown is going untouched. VERY good show. Good mix of local, national, pro, college, and off-topic. Good hosts. All-around good show. I wish this was their evening drive show because I think it might go over really well and actually put a local dent in the ratings of Finebaum. But Winches helped build that station financially so I think that timeslot is his for as long as he wants it. Plus part of the reason Dunnaway is doing mornings on NBC now is so that he doesn't have to be away from his family in the evenings.

It may be possible that he's hosting with someone else and he just didn't mention it...he was clarifying for someone who thought the AM show was going to remain the same, so i guess his point was to show who was going to be on AM show first, and he told where he was going and the rest for convenience...I hope someone else is with him...one person radio is not very effective (insert annoying solo host [JR, PF, etc]) ;)

I'll listen to anything out there that is decent as long as it's not Slimebaum's show. Some people like to listen to slimebaum because they think it is entertaining or whatever, but I just can't stand it. No class whatsoever, and the only good guests are a few of the old coaches. Other than that, it's just two idiots that don't have a clue about football wasting my time. Personally, I wish there was someone out there who could come in and run a good informative sports show that could put Slimey out of business.

Herb and Ray are not terrific, but at least they get some pretty good guest callers from time to time. If only they would stay on the college football bandwagon, they would be alot more successful in this state.
