When Mal Moore retires...

Re: When Mal Moore retires,

Ozzie would be a nice choice in my opinion. Some have said a career AD should be hired but Mal has done a great job despite not always being involved in administration.

Re: When Mal Moore retires,

I have the utmost respect for Coach Stallings, but he's almost 5 years older than Mal.

Ozzie Newsome would be my 1st choice. The question is would Ozzie be willing to accept a big salary cut and answer "Mama's call". I suspect he would.

Re: When Mal Moore retires,

I'd say that Ozzie, Williams, and Dean make for a pretty nice short list as is. I think there will be a lot more interest from other candidates as well when the time comes.

Re: When Mal Moore retires,

Johnny Williams will not receive anymore than a cursory interview. It will be Ozzie...bank on it!

If you don't hire someone who has been the GM of an NFL team who wants to come back home, you're an idiot! Ozzie has more experience than any other available person who "would" be interested in the job.

No way does Johnny Williams get the job and while Joe Dean Jr. certainly has the qualifications, again NOBODY has more qualifications from a management standpoint than Ozzie. Again, Ozzie has stated publically that he'd love to come back once his kids were older and he had completed his goals with Baltimore. Another year or two and those issues are resolved. Also, Mal would want to have a hand in picking his successor and he likes Ozzie and his qualifications. Ozzie is one of the few people who could, without question, take us to the next level!

Finally, there isn't anyone with higher moral standards than Oz either!

I'm not arguing against Ozzie by any stretch. I'd love to see what he could do as AD; but some of your remarks regarding qualifications, experience, and morals are downright silly.

Do you really think it'd be idiotic to place an emphasis on finding someone who has experience planning, budgeting, developing and directing all (not just football)intercollegiate athletic programs and activities? Would it be idiotic to take into consideration someone who has an understanding of the role of intercollegiate athletics in American higher education; a record of success and experience as a Division I administrator; experience with scheduling competition, building or repairing facilities and working closely with alumni ( fundraising ); thorough knowledge of NCAA regulations, requirements and reporting systems; and an understanding of marketing, development and promotion programs for all athletic programs at the intercollegiate level? To the best of my knowledge, I don't think Ozzie has any experience running an intercollegiate athletic department. Can an NFL GM do a good job as an AD of a major D-1 university? In the right situation, of course. Is a school idiotic for not hiring an NFL GM? Hardly.

Ozzie has more experience than any other available person who "would" be interested in the job.

Since we don't know yet when MM will retire, it's rather presumptious to claim that Newsome has more experience than any other available person who would be interested in the position. When the time comes, who knows who would be "available" and/or "interested." Can you honestly say that Ozzie has more "experience" running an athletic department than Johnny Williams, Joe Dean, Jr., or any other working AD - ie, Dave Hart, Jr.?

Finally, there isn't anyone with higher moral standards than Oz either!

That's putting Ozzie on quite a pedastal isn't it? I have no doubt that Newsome has nothing but the highest moral standards; but so do many, many other people.

Again, I personally think that a short list that includes Newsom, Williams, Dean, and maybe even someone like Hart would be a great situation to be in for the university.

Re: When Mal Moore retires,

I'm not downing Dean at all...because I've been a fan of his since I went to his Dixie basketball camp when I was a kid...but you have to look at what has happened at Birmingham Southern recently. I know it's probably not his fault, but they are going to be a Division III school now. This means no athletic scholarships for anyone. How could Joe Dean Jr., a great AD, let this happen to his athletic department? I do think he has great experience being an AD and I'm sure he certainly learned a lot from his dad...but I am just not too sure how good he is at negotiating and getting things done for his athletic department.

On the other side of the coin...if Coach Moore decides to retire in the next few years...it would make Joe Dean Jr. a big candidate for the job since he'd be looking for a school that cared about it's athletics. If we assume that the whole Division III thing was completely out of his hands...then I think he's a great candidate. But for now...let's let Mal win another National Championship before he retires.

RTR!!!

Finus Gaston :D :D :D

One thing I'll give Finus, just like his father, he knows how to bring money in.

As far as Williams...someone please tell me "no." What has he done since he's been in the position he currently holds?

Here are a few things you need to remember. It is just my opinion, but frankly I believe that Ozzie has more experience in budgeting, personnel and marketing than anyone who could possibly want the position. Joe Dean Jr. is a heck of a guy, but frankly he's never dealt with a budget like Bama's and Ozzie deals with a budget bigger than Bama's every year!

My point about morals is this. While many people have very high moral standards, none are higher than Ozzies. I never said that others didn't have very high morals, just none were higher.

"Do you really think it'd be idiotic to place an emphasis on finding someone who has experience planning, budgeting, developing and directing all (not just football)intercollegiate athletic programs and activities? Actually to answer your above questions, YES in a word I do. When someone is available who has experience planning, budgeting, developing and directing an NFL franchise, that experience is sufficient in my opinion to run a complete athletic department at a major university. I may be wrong, but I believe that Ozzie's budget is bigger than Bama's on a yearly basis. Of course, that budget includes players salaries and dealing with Ego's the size of Manhattan. Also, experience in dealing with the NCAA is way over stated. It means you have a preconceived notion as to who they are and how they work. Frankly I LOVE the idea of hiring someone who has NO TIES to the NCAA other than playing college football. He's not tarnished by it, nor has he subscribed to the FEAR of it that some (including many Bama people) have. One last point, we have an entire department of people who handle the day to day activities of the NCAA and while it is important for the AD to completely understand how it works and the rules, our compliance department are there to deal with that. It's no different than the President of the United States. Do you truly believe that he knows every little detail about every little country we deal with or is he a really good deligator? It's the latter, I'll tell you that. That is why we have Head Coaches and staffs in all other sports who put together their recommended budgets and give them to Coach Moore to deal with. The AD has to have a good handle on the OVER ALL big picture, which is what the CEO of any good company would do...they don't micro manage departments. The Athletic department at a school like Bama is the size of a company and should be run as such.

Finally, the thought of Williams even being on the list is a joke! As Terry pointed out, he's done nothing in the Associate role to date and his vast experience comes from (please say it aint so) Troy! Again, Joe Dean Jr. is a nice guy and yes he has NCAA experience, but IMHO he can't hold Ozzie's jock!

No freakin' way! He is pitiful. Our athletic department would be much better off without that idiot!

I didn't expect anyone to take my post serious. ;)

Ozzie would get my vote but I think some of you may understimate the support Ray Perkins still enjoys around the University.

I wouldn't.....when you stop and consider that Mike Shula is the head coach and that Joe Kines is the DC, it is obvious that Ray Perkins is still able to exert some influence in major decision making at the university. That being said, I don't think Ray should be making any plans to move back to Tuscaloosa from Mississippi......after all, he's already had one stint as AD here(back when it was fashionable for HC's in the SEC to wear both hats)....
