I was 39 and went over to my parents to watch it with my Dad, he grew up in the Atlanta area and was a GaTech/BobbyDodd fan until Coach Bryant and the "Tiny Giants" converted him. We both sat there in a zombie-like state as the finals minutes wound down. My Dad very rarely cussed, but he let loose with a blast that would have done a sailor proud and then went back to his usual "dang nabbits." At that time, anytime BAMA lost, I would immediately start getting a bunch of phone calls from my fire dept. buddies rubbing it in. I thought I was safe at my folk's house, but a couple of them even tracked me down there. :p_frown:

in 1980 i was 10, and waiting on my favorite game of the year at that time, Bama vs JoePa, i always loved that game every year, we beat the barn so much that it took a back seat then

i told my wife the other night that it has been so long since the Tide was ranked #1 during the season that it just looked strange to see them scroll ALABAMA #1 across the bottom of espn during other games,
here is to the good guys staying back on top for a very long time

ROLL TIDE !!!!!!!!!

I was 12 and living up here, I really wasn't a Bama fan yet. I really don't remember that time period. I did watch a variety of college football on tv, even some Bama games. I do remember watching the Liberty Bowl, CPB's last game as coach.

Well, I had just turned 20 and was heading off to Southwest Texas State University. Alabama football was more my parents 'thing' at the time, but I do remember hearing about my uncle 'taking to the bed' after this.

Hubby was at Troy. Thankfully, he had a frat party to take his mind off the game. lol

Alabama is the consensus No. 1 college football team during the regular season for the first time since 1980. That's a long time. So long ago, that I was a 10-year old the last time it happened.

I remember vividly the day it came to an end.

I was a just turned 11-year old (my birthday is October 28 - I turned 31 the day we lost to Central Florida) living in Columbus, MS and had NEVER BEFORE experienced a Tide loss, becoming a fan in 1977.

I just thought we always won every game. I didn't think it was humanly possible we could lose. My first two full years as a Tide fan and we finished first both years.

I wish we could get that 'we can't lose' feeling back again.

To make it worse, that was probably the best ever MSU team. And I had to listen to the Bulldawg fans harp all year about how great they were against what was not a very tough schedule (certainly not a Bama schedule).

I kept sneering when they'd win, saying that the day of reckoning was coming.

I will still never forget Pete Van Wieren coming on WTBS for their 5 o'clock football score update. Alabama's score was usually one of the first two or three, but he didn't give it for awhile. All of a sudden, he said - with no fanfare or anything - MSU 6 Alabama 3 and that's a final.

My jaw dropped and I literally began crying like a baby. My mom was sitting there and had heard me jawing for two months and starting laughing hysterically. My Dad even thought it was funny.

And one more anecdote that is NOT funny but it IS TRUE:

An elderly Alabama fan two doors down from us listened to that game on radio. When the game was over, he got up and turned off the radio, had an instant heart attack, and died.

It is still the most painful loss I can remember.

I had been married about 90 days... 28 years later & I'm still married to the same girl. Life ain't always been pretty but we've had FAR MORE laughs & smiles than tears & worry. As a Bama fan, it's been a fine ride so far this year & I sure want to see this motorcade continue unabated down I-13! :BigA:R!T!R!:BigA:

I was 3 months old, and blissfully ignorant to all things bad in the world around me. All that mattered was a clean diaper and warm milk. Those were the days.

I was 24 years old and my Dad and I had been out cutting some fire wood for his fireplace. We were riding back home and listening to the game on the radio. We were 2 shocked individuals.
I went a a church party that night and I was the ONLY Bama fan among a bunch of MSU fans. It hurt!

I was a little over 13 months from being born. So...this is the first time in my entired life that we have been ranked #1 during the season. I was old enough in the 90s to know Alabama as a powerhouse but my years at the University were anything but glorious (2000-2004). I'm sure my dad was pretty ....ed off though back in '80.

Here's to new beginnings!!!
