I don't recall when Tony Giles took over doing football games from Simpson Pepper (longtime announcer at Legion Field and Bryant Denny Stadium), but I know he's been PA announcer for other UA sports for quite some time.

Patterson also recognized long time public address announcer Tony Giles, “The Voice of the Crimson Tide” with the Pat Huet President’s Award. Giles has been the PA announcer for Alabama’s home meets for 15 years...

I wish Tony would give us more updates of other games over the PA. For example, when Awbun got "Croomed" my Miss St. and we played Georgia later in the day he never gave the war chicken score. Last year against Ole Sis, when Vandy beat Georgia he never announced the score either. On both occasions I told the guys sitting next to me that when they announce the score over the PA, BDS is going to go crazy. The PA announcement never came though. That is pathetic! When your chief rival is losing or has lost, take advantage by getting your crowd fired up! Last night in Baton Rouge when the PA announcer told the crowd that USC lost to Stanford 24-23, the place went bananas. You know good and well that got the LSU players more fired up, as evidenced by their 4th quarter rally. Please give us the scores in BDS!

Couldn't agree more. "Ladie and gentlemen...the Alabama....Crimson Tide".

It seems that our timeouts are full of nothing but advertising--something which is probably beyond Tony's control.

Simpson Pepper was great -- and is still announcing HS games at Legion Field, and serving as an administrator at a private school in Birmingham -- but I do understand the move.

Ask yourself this -- could Pepper handle all we do now? The in-game commercials, promos and the pregame with the band? Back when he was doing things, there weren't many responsibilities for the PA guy, other than to call plays, page "a-lum-a-nigh" at homecoming and have people report to the first aid station or call a Legion Field cop.

Giles does all that and has a ton of other responsibilities. I'm not sure Pepper could navigate his way through all that.

Incidentally, if you want to hear the polar opposite of Pepper and Giles, go to a Mississippi State game, which is apparently called by Humpy Wheeler's stunt double. Everyone's name sounds like "Boo-ee," no matter what their name really is.

True. I loved Pepper in his day, but I do understand the move. Right now, I've gotten hooked into the Fox re-broadcast of the game, hoping we'd look better. We don't. Why should the rebroadcast of a PPV game look so much better than the original...?

Thanks for the tip about the PA announcer for MSU, we're going to be at the game! I liked the way Pepper called the games when I went in the early to mid 90s as a student. I liked how he said Alabama.

I loved Mr. Pepper's voice in a sold out stadium. Those were great times. Like others have mentioned, I loved the way he enunciated "Alabama."

Loved him in his day. But, he did have some peculiar pronunciations. Does anyone remember, "No umbrellos in Bryant-Denny Stadium".

Didn't he also pronounce children as "chirun"? :)
