Who replaces Scott Cochran (nobody - he's staying)

Re: Who replaces Scott Cochran

I'm hoping he feels warmly towards the Bama program and has enjoyed living in Tuscaloosa and working under Saban. With all the love the Bama fans have shown him, it would be nice if it was mutual. (I know, I'm living in a dream world, and need to accept how things are these days.:))

Someone mentioned Ben Pollard upstream. There was a coach who loved coaching at Bama and was proud of it. I was sorry when he wasn't retained after Fran left. He's kind of old to be considered now, in my opinion.
Early-to-mid 50's is too old to be considered?

Speaking of UGA's willingness to spend money on football facilities - how would you guys rank the top 6 or 7 SEC programs in terms of facilities? I would assume Bama would be #1 but I have no clue who would be the next few programs that are in good shape with facilities..

Re: Who replaces Scott Cochran

It would not surprise me if Cochran left since his family is close to the Smarts but I assume him being a "grown up" he will weigh more than just his personal relationship when it comes to making this choice. There are definite risks to taking a job with Georgia. The budget and facilities are not the same. They just fired a coach who regularly won 9 and 10 games a season, how patient are they going to be if things go bad? What about the pension issue? These are not small issues to consider. It's not like Athens is that far to drive if their wives want to go shopping.

I don't think this would be a big consideration. With Cochran's accomplishments and reputation, he'd be without a job for about 15 minutes if things didn't work out. Regardless of where he was.

Former Alabama player, Mike Johnson, tweeted something about UGA's hiring of Cochran. Since he's in Georgia, does he know something people on this board don't know???????

Nobody can be hired until Sunday. However, Kirby and Scott are very close and it's presumed he'll go to UGA. That doesn't mean Saban can't back a Brink's truck up in the Cochran driveway this afternoon and change his mind.

But I would put decent odds on the hedges rattling with the sounds of Yeah, Yeah, Yeah next fall.

I really do like Coach Cochran but no one is irreplaceable. Coach Saban, just as all good leaders, looks at this as an opportunity. There are dozens of top notch coaches across the country willing to crawl to Tuscaloosa to take any open coaching position. I'm sure coach has a list of them all.

What's the incentive to go to Georgia beyond being a friend of CKS? I have great friends but moving is a pain in the butt. Georgia is not a better job. If CSC has children, they have to change schools. His wife has to leave her home. Money should not be the issue.

I'll be convinced he's leaving when someone he announces he's leaving.

No one seems interested in answering the question. I know nothing about this in the South. Are there any stand out candidates to replace him if he leaves?

That's just it. No one, except only the truly most die hard college football fanatics, knows who the strength coaches are.

Cochran was made the exception to that rule by Alabama's PR department.

As I said on another thread, CNS and The University made Cochran not the other way around. Hope he stays but I will gladly take the "Get Back Coach" duties. CNS, give me a call.

Re: Who replaces Scott Cochran

With Bama's ability to spend money to keep him (if CNS wants to), combined with Bama's massive training infrastructure (I've been told they spend money like it's coming out of a firehose in the training department, generally having bleeding-edge technology on hand to help the players rehab) - it might not be as cut-and-dried as CSC being good friends with CKS. UGA has cash but are they willing to spend it on football like Alabama is?
This is what I said. Cochran has the best of the best at Bama. They just built him a brand new weight room. Is UGA going to fork over the cash to hire him, and then buy all the toys he currently has? He's got a good thing going at Bama. A solid program and a boss that I believe will give him whatever he needs in order to make the team successful. I'm not sure CKS can go to UGA and demand the things that Coach Saban can at Bama when it comes to spending $'s.

Ok, I'll throw one out. Could we lure Tommy Moffitt from LSU. He's one of the top S&C coach in the nation.

What about Jeff Dillman. I thought that he went back to Saban's staff after Mac took over at Florida?

The only other name that jumps to mind is Gentry at VT.

While I hope we retain Cochran, that might be a great option. He is already on staff, knows how we train and has Ideas from working under Moffitt as well. In house promotion.

I don't know who their strength coach was when Alabama played them in the Music Bowl years ago, but I remember watching their players walk onto the field and thinking, "These guys look better than our guys." Then they beat us into oblivion that night.
