Who replaces Scott Cochran (nobody - he's staying)

Re: Who replaces Scott Cochran

If Coach Cochran leaves I would think we would go after someone who already works with like minded (similar style) players. That would be about a third of the pro teams, also LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. Most of those teams have players who are built like our players and play a more smash mouth style. I dont see going after someone who has worked for teams that are spread or HUNH. We would want a coach who already knows how to get the right muscle out of each player.

But I am not that smart, so I could very easily be wrong.

Re: Who replaces Scott Cochran

With Bama's ability to spend money to keep him (if CNS wants to), combined with Bama's massive training infrastructure (I've been told they spend money like it's coming out of a firehose in the training department, generally having bleeding-edge technology on hand to help the players rehab) - it might not be as cut-and-dried as CSC being good friends with CKS. UGA has cash but are they willing to spend it on football like Alabama is?
Head trainer Jeff Allen came and spoke at a local school during a career day. I spoke with him and asked what it was like working at Alabama and CNS. He said it's been wonderful and that he's (CNS) very interested in having the very best for his players in terms of keeping them from injury, and to help them recover to their peak after injuries. I asked if he had ever been told "No" in getting something, he replied, "NEVER!"

I think that's pretty awesome!

I wish I had seen that speech. Allen and his staff are unsung heroes at Bama IMO.

I think that Nick Saban has an understanding with all of his coaches that when you leave, you should not take any current coaches with you unless it is a upward mobility move. I believe KS would respect that. In my opinion it would be more likely that he would take one of the position coaches and promote them to a coordinator role or someone from the support staff and make them a position coach, with SC it would really only be a lateral move. I think he stays.

Re: Who replaces Scott Cochran

There's a possibility that he could "buy" his last year in the pension system here. Their rules are arcane and I don't pretend to know them all...
I've dealt with teachers retirement in Texas for the past 12 years and the State of Alabama teachers pension seems more restrictive from the documents I just read. It does not appear he can buy his way to 10 years of service. If he had 10 years he could buy additional years to increase his benefit.

Yes, he could take out a portion of what he put in the system but, UGA would really need to throw $$$ at him to make him whole. It is easily doable, they'd just have to make sure they word it so no other state employee can say he is getting an extra benefit since the plan does have to meet defined benefit guidelines and you can't 'discriminate'......

I could see him taking Napier as his OC.

Re: Who replaces Scott Cochran

I think that this thread has shown us that Alabama has a few great options to replace Cochran if he leaves. That is good news since I was really unsure, knowing so little of the landscape in this particular area. I am not worried about OC or DC at all, just the change in general and time for player to adjust to the new coaching techniques.

I would think that the superior facilities and support at Bama would trump friendship.

Saban and Cochran don't interact on a daily basis as it is. Why would it be any different at UG? :cool2:

Re: Who replaces Scott Cochran

I would like for us to take a look at Zac Woodfin. Young guy (32, I think), NFL experience (assistant at Green Bay for 3 years), been the head guy at two programs that saw huge improvement during his time (UAB and Southern Miss), from Alabama and played at UAB.

I want to keep Cochran too. But I don't think the retirement thing will be much of an issue. If they really want him, UGA could make an annuity part of his signing comp.

He's only 36, so even a pretty high monthly payout would be far enough out into the future would be relatively inexpensive today.

If we keep him, it'll be for reasons other than TRSA.

Went to school with him. Good guy and very motivated. Seems to have a way of motivating others as well.

Re: Who replaces Scott Cochran

I may have missed it in another thread, but what's the latest on Cochran - staying or going ?
YES...

He's either staying (Likely) or Going...

Scott has a sweet deal at Alabama.
Good salary, great facilities, good players he has already developed. Not to mention the hassle of moving...

If Scott goes to Ga. it will likely be for more than $400,000
If Scott stays at Al. It will likely be for more than $400,000

The questions Scott will have at Ga.: Will they commit to building facilities similar to what he would leave behind at Alabama?
Will Ga. accommodate Scott on his request for changes, or will he face financial limitations he doesn't face at Alabama?

Sometimes the hard part is to get folks up off their wallet. Lots talk a good game, but will they put up when it counts?
I think friendship with Smart is a great thing, but the timing isn't right to pull up stakes and move.
