Who Would Coach Bryant Select As Our Starting QB?

If Coach Bryant was considering who to choose as our starting QB, he would want the guy who provided the best positive leadership and committed the fewest turnovers on the field. He would also want someone who was not a quitter.

Croyle is a positive leader who generates turnovers.

Pennington is unpoven as a leader and hasn't played enough to indicate his propensity for ball protection.

Gullion is someone who quit on his original commitment.

Looks to me like Coach Bryant might turn to someone other than those three, if that person could provide positive leadership, protect the ball, and not quit. Maybe one of the other players on the team who have played the QB position, or maybe an incoming freshman.

What do you think?

This is not intended as a flame against you in any way, but I don't think it matters what Coach Bryant would have done, he's not the head coach at Alabama. However, Brodie Croyle played through a severely separated shoulder, broke ribs, and who knows what else. I think he has displayed the necessary leadership the position requires.

i don't know what he would do.

if it were my decision, i would start Spencer Pennington. He has the best "field-sense" of any of the BAMA QBs that i have seen. right now, with the problems on the LOS, that would pay off. Spencer may not throw the ball as hard as Brodie, but anyone that watched the A-Day game can attest to the fact that he's just as accurate if not more accurate.

what Pennington did in the uga game wasn't a fluke, and i hope he gets some playing time in '04 whether it be at the end of games or as a starter.

What did Pennington do in the UGA game? We got blown out by the first quarter, didn't we. He looked good when he came in right before halftime against Arkansas.

Still, Croyle is the guy. Barring injury, he will remain the guy while hes here. He has the best arm and the most experience. His only fault so far has been a tendency to throw a few too many picks, but he is no worse than Watts, Zow, Kitchens, or dare I say it, Jay Barker his sophomore season.

Bama83, I think you're way overthinking this issue. Coach Bryant always had a strong leader at QB. In most cases his QBs also were very talented. Brodie fits the bill on both counts. He is the undisputed leader of the offense and the most talented QB on the team. As a matter of fact, he will be the most talented QB on the field in most of Bama's games this year. Coach Bryant also loved "family" and Brodie is a 2nd generation Tider whose father played for Coach Bryant.

Trust me, Brodie would be the starting QB if Coach Bryant was the coach today.

Bama83,

Care to define the "generates turnovers" remark about Brodie? If my memory is correct, he had 13 picks last season. That doesn't seem excessive to me considering he was playing with one arm behind a porous O-line.

Pat Trammell would be his starter.

I believe the starter would have been someone who is not even currently on the team. Not sure who this would be, but it wouldn't be Croyle or Pennington.

I agree, 13 interceptions does not seem excessive. Brodie started 11 of the games last year, so basically it is about a little over 1 pick per game. As many times as we threw the ball last year, I think that is about average for quarterbacks. Brodie has been a favorite whipping boy on this site, but I feel alot of it is unjustified. Interceptions can result from several things that is out of the control of the QB, such as pass protection, receivers running the correct route, batted balls or deflections. Also let us see what he can do if he can get his shoulder healthy.

Great Post! I agree.
Guys at this age don't necessarily get "better" all by themselves. They need to be taught how to push further, and from my memories of last year, no ability to even check out of a play, no ability to "see" downfield, no timed patterns, ALL of Alabama's quarterbacks have plenty to learn.

Coach Bryant would simply "coach them up", and probably wouldn't tell them WHO was starting until the day or so before gameday.
And boosters and family probably didn't run the show as much back then with Coach Bryant as HC.
None of our current qb's are perfect, and none of them suck. The scheme CMS uses and O-Line intelligence will have a lot to do with BC's success this year.

What if Elanor Roosevelt could fly would WWII have lasted as long?

"WHAT THE HELL'S THE MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE DOWN THERE? DON'T Y'ALL TAKE YOUR FOOTBALL SERIOUSLY?" -- Coach Bryant, upon calling Auburn at 6 AM only to find out that none of the coaches were in their offices yet!

"I don't think it matters what Coach Bryant would have done" is precisely the attitude that has led up to all our problems.

If Ingram, Stallings, DuBose and Moore would have thought "it matters what Coach Bryant would have done," we would all be on this board talking about winning a National Championship in 2004 instead of hoping we might have a winning season with our probation-crippled team coached by a last-minute substitute.

Thank you for your response. Perhaps with some more playing time Pennington can evolve into the type of QB that Coach Bryant would start.

I'm not even going to read any of the replies, but this shouldn't even be discussed. Topics like these give rivals a reason to laugh at us. Wonder if Coach Bryant would do away with the nike jersey's??? hmmmmmm.... discuss
