He was running the program right into the ground, and some of the recruiting misses were because of that.
I was one of those people who wanted to give Shula a chance to coach four full classes of his own recruits before making a decision on his coaching acumen. He was bringing in some great talent (already listed before), but they were the exception rather than the rule and he simply didn't develop them. That's not hate, man. That's the truth.
