Why do players opt out?

Ja’Marr Chase having a great rookie year isn’t great for CFB, at least not for teams that likely won’t be in line for a championship. Will Anderson has shown the NFL all they need to see, but he can play for a championship next year at Alabama. If he were at most any other program, I could see him sitting out next year.
I doubt it has to do with playing for a championship - some dudes just want to play the game. Like it or not there are guys who don't love football, they just know they can't beat the earning potential doing anything else, so they do it while they can to cash in. But Anderson seems like a guy who loves the game.

I doubt we'll see a mass of players sitting the entire season - lots of guys simply love playing the game.

A player sitting out a meaningless bowl game doesn’t really bother me. If we don’t make the playoffs and Young says he isn’t going to the bowl game and our 2023 QB gets an early start, so be it.

Quitting midseason would bother me. Bailing on the entire season just boggles my mind.

What I would love to see is a player make a couple million in NIL while he redshirts his freshman year. Then say “I’ve made enough money to live comfortably the rest of my life. I don’t want to risk being a cripple with CTE when I’m 40. So I’m taking my money, finishing my education, and getting a real job.”

Don't forget they have to pay income taxes on the NIL income...

True. But if this hypothetical player had 500-750K left after taxes (helps if he lives in Texas or Florida) and invested wisely, he could be in good shape living off investment income and money from his job.

Also notice I said “live comfortably”, not “live like Bill Gates”.

At a minimum, it is a great head start on life.

While the NIL deal cannot be 'performance-based', I'm fairly certain legal minds can find a way to insure payment requires the type of work required for the contract to be fulfilled.

Agreed, but it cannot require that the person play football. That is one of the legal stipulations. Can't be tied to a school or to play.

I get that, but there will be ways around that, if there aren't already.

Ultimately, the companies offering NIL deals will want a guarantee that the kid isn't going to take their cash then 'retire'.

For my education, because I really don’t know — who determines those “legal stipulations”?

If it’s the NCAA, given its inability to regulate a paper bag, there might as well be no restrictions at all. If it’s laws passed by state legislatures, that’s a different story.

So unless Milo’s has a short-term deal, they still have to pay Bo Nix, despite the fact that he’s playing the rest of his ball outside of a 2,500 mile radius of any Milo’s store.

Sorry, I was referring to simply transferring, not full on retiring. That would definitely be ridiculous.
I can think of several things that would definitely have been ridiculous not long ago:

- OL downfield rule at 3 yards, effective enforcement at 5 or more.

- 24 / 7 / 365 free agency in college football

- Open paying of players in college sports, let alone debate as to whether the payer has to pay if the player transfers or just quits.

- The NCAA having an enforcement arm that is less effective than the troop of patrol boys at my elementary school.

Yet here we are.

The crux, NCAA still does not allow pay for play or contracts which are tied to a specific school.

Chase with the Bengals has opened that gate.
Don't forget Micah Parsons and the year he had. Unfortunately, with their success it might pave the way for more of this. I hope the NIL makes these guys think otherwise. I would like to believe that both Young and Anderson have the opportunity for significant legitimate national NIL deals given their stature.

They do, but they can sit out and make just as much, if not more money because some companies will have a bidding war to see who can sign those two future top 5 picks. They can say they are protecting tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars of future income potential by sitting out. Just think about how differently we would view our team next year without those two leading the way.

If they take care of the game, the money will always be there. If they take care of the money, the game will go away. Roll Tide!
